WTB, 911 or 356 to drive across USA for mid life crisis
I'm an Aussie hooking up with a mate from Thailand in May for our 50th
birthdays & associated mid-life crisis.
We want to buy a Porsche & drive it across America, then ship it to
Singapore & drive it up to the top of Thailand.
Anyone have any recommendations on reputable dealers etc to approach.
We want to have something pretty well ready to go when we arrive, with a
minimum of fettling required.
As my mate will be keeping the car when we are finished, we don't want a
bomb.
Thanks in advance

Since you mention 911/356 and are looking at driving it in Thailand I have
to surmise you are talking about older, carbureted cars. Unlikely you will
find anything you would be interested in buying at a dealer. Maybe some
pristine 356 show cars, but older 911's, probably not. And those 'show
cars' aren't something you would want to put a lot of road miles on,
especially in SE Asia.
I'd look into Porsche Club of America.

Members have cars of all types, from show cars to daily drivers. Local
clubs should have classified listings for you to check.
Good Luck

Personally, I'd want to use a 944 turbo of 928 for such a trip -
cheaper and more modern, more cargo room, great cross country
cruisers, but obviously your friend wants something of long term
interest to himself.
European Collectibles specializes in 356s, has a good reputation,
and they always had a stock of good 356s on hand. They were a little
famous about a year ago, when a car carrier with some of their
inventory was hit by a train at a railroad crossing. They're at
http://www.europeancollectibles.com/.
The next source I can think of would be the Porsche 356 Registry
classifieds at www.356registry.org/ but those might be more
problematic as it's mostly private sellers. After that, I'd try
Collector Car Trader Online (www.cctol.com) and Hemmings Motor News
(www.hemmings.com - which appears to be down as I write this).
Good luck,

A 356 would be fun, but a 911 will be a lot more comfortable. Used, I'd be
looking for a 911SC -- with all applicable upgrades. They have that classic
911 look. They are reliable, high mileage cars. They are not that
expensive and hold their value well. Fuel injection will help with
elevation changes and keep the power up. ALL Porches are expensive to
repair. Period.
