Corvette: Why you can't trust JD Power or Consumer Reports

Why you can't trust JD Power or Consumer Reports
This has to do with the ongoing battle where people bash JD Power and CR
when they give poor scores to Vettes, etc.
Real simple - Jeep. How bad does the average Jeep TJ do according to
CR? Probably dead last compared to the competition. How many times
does your average Jeep owner bust stuff off-roading and then get a
survey from CR or JD Power? Lies, damn lies and statistics.
They don't take into account owners when they talk about reliability...
I filled out the JD Power survey for my Trans Am. I also have close
to 50 passes at the drag strip on it. In 5 years when the ask me what
broke and I tell them "rear end, transmission" they don't ask if I have
nitrous on it. Your average Joe Blow driving a Honda Accord doesn't
exactly abuse their car - I'm sure I wouldn't break stuff if I drove
it like my mother would. But then I'd be driving a transportation
appliance - and I'm sure it wouldn't have nitrous.
That's why I take JD Power and CR with a (big) grain of salt - TransAms
get low scores for some stuff that may be deserved, but if you "drive it
like you stole it", you're going to break stuff.

I love the ones that are for "Initial quality". As in "our [fill in name]
won the JD Powers award for initial quality". What the hell does that
mean?? They ask people how they like their car on the way out of the
showroom? "Yea, I just picked this car up and nothings broken".

JD Powers is quite meaningless. The Industry likes anything that could
make them look good but the award is a joke.
I've read the website and it's pretty clear it's a lot of BS that's
been dipped in a batter of psycho babble.
The people that use JD Powers are probably the same ones who got
burned ofn the Chevy Vega and Ford Fairmonts.
Oh and yeah I bought both of those new! haha
But every car maker has it's lemons. I still don't read JD Powers
except for laughs.

Hey, let's not knock the Vega. It was a good car. What messed it up was
Chevy marketing. They had soft iron rings running on aluminum silicate
walls. that required a break in oil to seat the iron rings. But Chevy in
their infinite wisdom decide this was a perfect time to do the long
maintenance schedules to "reduce costs". So you took your iron ring Vega,
drove it 7500 miles on break in oil, and suddenly, you have none of your
rings sealing anymore. Wonder why they smoked?
This would have happened to most cars in the '50s and early '60s, but they
had first oil changes early. The chrome moly rings used in the '70s and up
had most fooled into thinking you didn't need an early oil change anymore.
But Vega iron rings did.
The ones smart enough, or lucky enough, to do an oil change in the first
1000 miles came away with cars that drove well, got decent mileage (good for
the time - 25 mpg or more), and were somewhat sporty cars.
The rust complaints were really no worse than nearly all other cars out
there at the time.
Yes, my engine blew up. I drove it like I stole it most of the time. At
50,000 miles, I got a new engine. It cost me $10 because the timing belt
wasn't covered. Then I drove that one for another 100,000 miles.
Of course, JDP probably covered the Vegas with the special weird color
coordinated wheels or the ones with automatics, air, and 1 bbl. That is a
combination that makes a Chevette look fast.

Hey let us in fact knock the Vega. What a total POS it ranks up there
with teh biggest lemons of all time.
Granted I took teh Body and dropped a built 350 into it. It had a
blower and was barely street legal. With the wheelie bars which were
needed it would run mid to high 10's in the quarter.
It was seriously quick.
but in stock form as well as my parents Vega it was one problem after
another since day 1. They traded theirs after 6 months of intense
frustration.
There were so many other problems like electrical gremilns and parts
literally falling off the car and damn near everything under the hood
died in my parents car within 6 months. It wasn't just the rings.
Withing 6 months it started rusting, really pissed my dad off. I never
bring it up as he'll start in on it all over again. Forgetting I was
there for all of it.
I had a Chevette for a while, nice boring little car. No problems at
all with it. just massively underpowered.
