Toyota: When it rains, the carpeted floor behind the passenger's seat gets wet

When it rains, the carpeted floor behind the passenger's seat gets wet

When it rains, the carpeted floor behind the passenger's seat of this Toyota
Corolla gets wet. The wetness is not being caused by the air-conditioner
moisture drain, it only happens when it rains.

Removing the carpet behind the passenger's seat reveals a round, black
rubber device, which is flat and about three to four inches in diameter.
The device can be seen from underneath the car, so it appears to plug a
circular hole in the floor board. Is this device somehow allowing rain
water to get between the floor board and the carpet behind the passenger's
    seat?

Pull up the carpet and run water from a hose under your car against this
plug and see if any leaks in. Do you have a moon roof? Maybe that drain
    hose is blocked.

Probably not the culprit. When the cars are shipped they are attached
thru that hole and dealers are supposed to put in the plugs you found.
But in NC most dealers neglect that (my experience with 3 Toyotas) and
there is no water complaints according to the dealer (when I asked him
to put the damn things in).

I had the same problem on my 86 Corolla. If you bend down and look in the
rear wheel wells, just in front of the tires you will see a triangular piece
of metal with a nut welded to it. It may have a black rubber plug
protruding out of the nut. The metal triangle has pulled away from the body
allowing water thrown up by the tires to run behind it and into the rear
seat compartment. When it gets real bad it will overflow into the front
floor. The fix is to remove the back seat and put a bolt (use a large
washer on the inside) and nut into the hole that you saw in front of the
tire. This will pull in the triangular piece of metal and close off the
leak. If you have a lot of rust around the hole, first tape it up with duct
tape. Let me know if it solves your problem.

I'll let you know as soon as I test it. In the meantime, would you happen
to know the best way to drain the steering fluid? Is there a drain plug at
the bottom of the rack and pinion gear assembly?
