Saab: Water Pump issue / help

Water Pump issue / help
96 9000 CSE
Noticing anti-freeze on frame and undercarriage below airconditioner
compressor and water pump area. When the water pump starts to go / wear,
what are the first signs of time for a new pump?
Concerned leaking anti-freeze will work it's way onto brand new serpentine
belt.
Looks like pump is $130 and probably another 80-160 for labor.
Any thoughts/help is appreciated

They really only have three failure modes:
Bearing - gets noisy, then belt comes off
Seal - leaks
Pump to block gasket - leaks

When you say noisy, do you mean sqeaks or grumbles?

I've seen both - a repetetive squeak, and a horrible grinding noise.

Mine seems to squeak a little when cold at idle.
When at drving speed, or idling warm it is gone.
Thought it might be the pump, but not sure now.

So does one of mine. On mine it is the water pump. It'll get replaced
when it gets *much* worse, or starts leaking.

Cheers. thats what I like to hear.
I'll check if there is any noticable play/wobble in the wheel that the
belt runs round.
I miss the old Skoda water pump. Driven off the belt, with a little cap
that unscrewed and topped up with grease once a year (fill the cap, not
the pump, then screw it back onto the pump and it pushes itself into the
pump body). Lasted forever they did, unless the coolant was just water
inwhich case the impeller just coroded away, but nothing to do with the
mechanics of it.
