    Water form under dash?

Hey all, I have a 89 YJ (just bought it 1 week ago) and today it was raining
pretty hard when I was driving home, while driving I noticed the floor was
getting wet and my pants were too, the water was coming from under the dash.
when I got home I took a look and yep there was quite a bit of water
dripping form the lip of the dash (underneith), it was too hard to see where
the water was actually getting in unfortunatly, there was water aound the
steering coloum and the stereo (I had to take the stereo out because it
wan't working properly anymore now that water was getting into it)...

So my question is... where is it most likely the water is coming from?? I'm
guessing from aound the base of the windshield or where the front end meets
the firewall area so I have siliconed everything up aournd there, this will
of course efect my lowering the windshield if I ever wanted too, but I had a
feeling that because the windshield does fold down that maybe the water was
getting in that way? I was driving so maybe it was from the wheels kicking
up the water? under the hood all looked dry

    anyway any help is apriciated

    thanks
    Brent

well brent, I have a 89 yj I purchased last summer as a project. I saw
virtually no rust on the entire vehicle. After getting it home, I lowered
the windshield, and holy cr@p, there was all kinds of rust. I only know of
one kind of rust, but I'm sure there were 3 or 4 there. Anyway, I have
been schooled that this is a problem area. There is a metal plate behind
all the plastic dash pieces that screws onto the lip under the windshield.
Thats the piece on mine that was rusted to heck. The Factory paint under
it all was completely fine. I bought a new one and put it in, then sealed
the heck out of it. Common problem with jeeps I understand.
I suggest lowering your windshield, taking a look, and at least clean out
the crud a couple of times a year, if not more..
    suggestions anyone?

Also, if this piece is rusted I advise caution. If it rusts away from all
of those screws, your whole dash will fall off, so taking care of this area
    is critical.

    Thanks Robb S

I had a feeling that is where the problem was weather hasn't been very nice
these day's but I think it is supposed to be sunny and warm on the weekend,
if so I will take you advice and lower the windshield to have a look, clean
it up then put the windshield back up and seal the crap out of it....

    thanks,

No problem. One other thing, take a look at the gasket. It may be old,
worn and cracked. I'm told (From here) that if you let your windshield
down from time to time, it relaxes the gasket, and allows it to seal
better. I replaced my metal dash because I planned on keeping the jeep for
a long time. There are lots of good rust sealers out there like por15,
etc... but when I removed mine, I found rust behind it. Could be that your
seal is just leaking...let me know how it turns out.
