Audi: Warning sound doesn't work

Hi,

I have a 98 A4 2.8 and the warning sound that comes on when one leaves the
lights on or when the temperature outside falls within freezing range
doesn't work. I've heard this is a major deal on the 98 A4s. Is this so?
If not, can I fix this myself (how)?
