Warning messages coming up for no reason (E34)

My E34 has started to give error messages for no apparent reason.

I get "Bong!" and "BREMSLI.ELECTRIC", (brake light warning ) sometimes
followed by "EDS something" and "Refer to the handbook". This is
intermittent, and the brakelights are working fine. There is no OBC.

Anyone know what could be wrong?

I'm wondering if there is a central control module somewhere in the car which
may be going bad (?). With any luck, it won't be a computer module with a $500
    price tag.

We have the same trouble, but with the message reading "low coolant level"
each time the car is started. Goes away once I start to drive! Level is always
fine. Had the level sensor replaced. No improvement. Local dealer really no
help. They are not too keen when it comes to intermittant electronic
    troubleshooting.

Question for anyone out there - would this type of trouble appear as a
    diagnostic code???

Check all the connections on your light clusters where the lamp holder pins
touch the metal terminal plate and the multi plug connectors for loose
contacts and signs of arcing. I had a loose connection on the brake light
which arced and melted the plastic backing allowing the plate to move away
from the lamp holder pin and bring up a fault. I packed out behind the plate
and bent the pins for a better contact and that cleared the fault.

It's probably your brakelight switch that's causing your problem. More
info can be found on this website:

There is a central control module called the "Check Control Module".
It's located under the bonnet on the left side in the fuse box. It's
the second module when viewed from the side of the car. Try cleaning
the contacts on the module with electrical contact cleaner. If this
doesn't help it might be a wire that's about to break in the wiring
    loom.

Thanks. Good advice to try out.

Do you know if it's worth opening this module up to check for interior loose
connections or cold solder joints while I have it in my hand?

    loose

I knew a guy with an E34 540, whose engine was stumbling and lighting the
Check Engine light. Dealer put it on the computer and showed error codes on
all 8 injectors. Eventually diagnosed it as a faulty fuel injection
computer, replacement was close to $2K cdn. Guy didn't agree. Finally,
they reached in, gave the harness for the computer a good shove to reseat
it, and all the codes cleared.

Kicker of it is... had the mechanic changed the computer, all would have
been well with the car, he would have paid his bill, and complained to his
friends about how expensive BMW's are to maintain.

I always open a module when I have it in my hands :-)

I have a used check control from a 92 525 in my car. When I opend it
all the electronics where sealed with some sort of resin. I did have
some errors comming up with this module at first, but after cleaning
all the contacs with sanding paper and contract cleaner the module
    works fine.

If that doesn't help it's back to checking the wiring from the sensor
    to the checkcontrol unit.
