Want to add some audio (mp3 and satellite) to my new 2002....

Just brought home my first vette.. A 2002 coupe.. electric blue and I want
to add some adio. My goal is mp3 hardrive and xm radio.

Kenwood has receivers and mp3 palyers that act like cd changers.. perfect,
but they only seem to support sirius, not XM..

Sony and pioneer have head units that have hardrives, but don't seem to
support satellite radio and got some bad reviews..

and I don't think I can add anything to the stock Bose sound system..

    Any help is appreciated...

Here is where I would seriously start: www.crutchfield.com

The coolest thing I have seen in a C5 is the Alpine DVD / MP3 / XM player.
It does it all, but it isn't cheap.

    Alpine IVA-D900

    Mobile Multimedia Station
DVD/MP3 Receiver with Motorized 7" Monitor
    Item #500iVAD900
In Stock Our Price - $2,299.99

Alpine's IVA-D900 Mobile Multimedia Station is The Godfather of mobile video
receivers: an absolute masterpiece! Its 7" low-temperature poly-silicone LCD
video monitor provides 400% more pixels than conventional LCD screens. The
picture is brighter and more detailed, with higher contrast, more dramatic
colors, and a wider viewing angle.
And then there's expandability. Not only does this receiver have a host of
inputs for Alpine components (such as a DVD changer, navigation system, or
XM Radio tuner), it also has three A/V inputs and two A/V outputs. Just add
a couple of rear-seat monitors to open up the entertainment possibilities.
Multi-zone audio-video control allows independent source selection for each
monitor. Imagine it - one child watching a DVD, another playing a video
game, while you listen to XM Radio up front!
The IVA-D900 plays your CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs (even discs loaded with MP3
files), and its MaxTune SQ tuner delivers first-rate AM/FM reception.
Whatever your listening preferences, the powerful built-in amplifier
reproduces your music with precision and authority. If you're into serious
fine-tuning, Bass Engine® Plus offers equalization, time correction, and
crossover capabilities, while MediaXpander brings out all the dynamics of
    your music and movie soundtracks.
Once the unit has been installed, easy-to-follow on-screen menus provide
instructions for system setup and control. Quick Search allows you to select
a menu, then use the rotary knob to scroll through its list of options - a
real bonus if you're looking for a particular MP3 song or XM Radio channel.
A full-function wireless remote is included for your convenience.
    Key Features:
    motorized, low-temperature poly-silicone LCD 7" video monitor
1.15 million pixels for exceptional picture quality
    monitor angle adjustment
    detachable face
plays DVDs, CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, and MP3 discs
    Bass Engine® Plus
    4-channel time correction
    3-position high-/low-pass crossover
bass and treble center frequency control
    subwoofer level and phase control
    MediaXpander
XM Satellite Radio controls (XM Radio subscription, tuner, antenna required
to receive the satellite radio signal.) - service is available only in the
lower 48 states, not available in Alaska, Hawaii, or U.S. territories
    multi-zone capable
    MaxTune SQ tuner
    Ai-Net CD/DVD changer controls
    3 audio/video inputs
    navigation input
    rear camera input
    2 audio/video outputs
3 sets of 4-volt preamp outputs
    digital art spectrum analyzer display
    wireless remote
    23 watts RMS/50 watts peak x 4 channels
    DVD/CD signal-to-noise ratio 115 dB
    DVD/CD frequency response 5-20,000 Hz
    FM sensitivity 9.3 dBf
    1-year warranty

I did it a different way. Delphi makes a hidden unit that goes between the
fm antenna and the head unit. Just tune to 87.9 and use your remote
control to change the channels. Just a thought for you to ponder......

Yeah, that unit was a bit pricey, eh? :-) For 2 grand there ought to be
a button for washing your car and giving you a blow job while you wait for
the car to finish getting washed.

There were plenty of SWEET head units on Crutchfield.com - did you check
    them all out?

I replaced all my speakers with Eclipse, have just a 200W amp and a Alpine
Mp3 ((xm)) system in it. Out f-in standing sound. 150 songs on one cd.
    Check-out e-bay for good prices.
Alpine CDA 9511. I gave 353.09 locally (Tampa). I've seen it on ebay for
    just over $200.
It's in the C-4 though. I junked the Bose crap long ago. This is 1000%
better. The Alpine even has a gimmick that you can adjust the sound
    independently for each speaker.

I wonder if I'd have to pull all new wires in my C5? My CD player (stock)
is getting lazy and I'd like to upgrade the head unit. Do the speakers need
to go also? Right now I have a only a dual voice coil 12 in sub in the
trunk at 350 watts. My highs and mids are a little lacking although the mid
bass is wonderful as is the thump.

Re: Want to add some audio (mp3 and satellite) to my new 2002....

I have a question....I have a 2001 coupe and have replaced the Bose
tuner with an Alpine CDA-9815 with XM Radio. The sound through the
Bose speakers lacks almost all base, even with the EQ boosted in the
Alpine. I'm going to replace the stock speakers with Infinity's.

My real question is that I'm not crazy about XM's implementation of
only sending 14 characters of the song...stupid! I'm looking at
switching to Sirius with a Kenwood deck. I was just about ready to do
this and the installer said that he can't install Sirius in a Vette as
there's not a sufficient groundplane, since the car is fiberglass.
Has anyone ever heard this before? He installed XM with the antenna
right at the front of the dash...nice looking and unobtrusive. Sirius
is transmitting on about 12 MHz less that XM, but antenna technology
should be exactly the same and I would think that if XM works, Sirius
    should also.

Re: Want to add some audio (mp3 and satellite) to my new 2002....

Why would the antenna technology be the same? 12 MHz is a huge difference
in wavelength. The way to get around the ground plane problem (if you can
find a spot to do it) is to put a piece of thin sheet metal under the
fiberglass directly under the antennae. 1 foot square should do it, 2 foot
square would be better. You can glue it to the fiberglass with anything
that will hold it, maybe even double sided tape. Just try to keep the glue
layer as thin as possible. You also have to run a 14 gauge wire from this
piece to the chassis. It won't be a perfect world solution because of the
capacitance created by the thickness of the fiberglass, but it should be
good enough for digital. If you were working with analog FM, you would have
to add a matching capacitor is series with the antennae wire as well.

I put a Pioneer MP3 XM receiver in my car. I have no complaints. The dealer
that sold me it holds almost all name brands & he recommended my the Pioneer
    for Skip resistance.
