City Navigator NA is on backorder from Garmin and we've been told that
when it ships it will be v8. I'm guessing that the magic free update date
will be June 1st but I don't know that for sure.

Yes they normally do. However they don't pro rate it. The update will
either be free or will cost depending on when/if you registered your unit.
