Check out Steeroids. I don't have a link, but if you do a search you'll
find them in about a nanosecond. They seem to have a good reputation and a
lot of happy customers.

Re: Upgrade of PS in a 77 L-82
Sorry but I really do not understand the NEED to upgrade
the powersteering.... WHY ? And what are your reasons...? Just curious,
maybe my brain is not in gear this morning but I have 3 sharks and besides
the yearly
spring leaks that last 2 weeks before the seals swell and the leaks stop I
have no problems ..

Re: Upgrade of PS in a 77 L-82
The car handles pretty good...but the steering feels "loose" until I get to
about 1/4 turn of the wheel in either direction.....I've been told the
steering box needs to be replaced/rebuilt and I have a PS fluid leak. I am
planning to upgrade most of the other parts in my car
brakes/suspension/intake/exhaust so I figured I would take a look at what
was out there in the way of steering. I've always loved the C3 body style
but always liked the performance of the newer Vettes. If I had the money I
would pay someone to built a C3 body around a C5 Vette ;-) I guess there
really isn't a NEED...but if I am upgrading everything else why leave out
the PS??

Just repair/or replace the steering box...AFTER you first attempt to adjust
it....

Bob:
The old style recirc ball steering box, rebuilt or not, will never be as
tight and precise as R&P steering. I don't know about yours, but my car
requires constant attention to keep it going in a straight line. If I had
the money, I would take the steering components off, put them away in a safe
place, and put the Steeroids rack & pinion system in. The steering (or lack
thereof) is my only complaint about my car. You have to remember that the
steering system on a 68 Corvette is no different than the steering system on
a 68 Impala, yet the Corvette can go a whole lot faster. Leave the man
alone. He's not doing anything crazy or extreme to his car. When the time
comes to sell it, he can hand the original components to the buyer. The
Steeroids system doesn't require any drilling or welding, so he's not going
to do anything to devalue the car either.

Re: Upgrade of PS in a 77 L-82
Oh, but it is different from a '68 Impala. Alignment geometry, the type of
box, ratios, the drag link behind rather than in front.
Your '68 should be steering stable at 150. If it isn't, then you have
problems that need to be fixed. Don't confused worn out 35 year old parts
for how the system should work.
Yes, a rack and pinion system will be tighter, however, he will have a lot
of expense for very little improvement that he can notice. If he is
autocrossing the car, or lives in West Virginia, western NC, or eastern TN,
then he might get to use the extra.
Odds are he will not find tires that can actually use the higher handling
levels of the R&P. In fact, he probably won't be able to get tires that can
exceed the capacity of the stock system in good condition.
There are virtually no high performance tires in a wide 60 series x 15 inch
rim any more. Or any other series. Without going to 16 inch wheels (more
expense), he is stuck.
It is an endless bottomless money pit.

Re: Upgrade of PS in a 77 L-82
Alignment geometry will make a small difference. Of course it will be
different than a big ass sedan. The placement of the drag link don't mean
diddly. The ratio only decides how many times you have to turn the wheel,
not how well it holds center. To get the recirc ball boxes to hold center
well, you have to crank down on the pre-load. Then you get stiff steering.
Maybe it is stable at 150...I'll never find out, but on a road with a high
crown or grooves, forget it.

Re: Upgrade of PS in a 77 L-82
If you have been cranking down on the pre-load, you have worn out a section
of the worm, which now means it gets harder and harder to keep it tight at
the center of travel. You probably have a lot of slop when going straight.
Alignment is what keeps the car going straight and centered, not the load on
the steering box.
