BMW: unsteady E34!

unsteady E34!
I have an E34 (518i, 1988), which recently has become unsteady at high speed
on the motorway. Whereas before it would drive in a straight line, but now
it tends to wonder around a little, and I have to constantly correct the
steering to ensure the car drives in a straight line. I am pretty sure that
the problem is not to do with the steering or the front wheels. The reason
that I say this, is that when the car goes over a 'bump' that is all the way
across the road, the car jolts slight to one side only when the rear wheels
go over the 'bump'. Can anyone one please advise on what the problem could
be.
TIA.

Re: unsteady E34!
It sounds like one of your rear shocks is blown out. Go to the rear of the
car and press down on the left corner of the car, then do the same to the
right side. Do both sides respond the same?

Re: unsteady E34!
Check the front tie-rod ends and other ball joints for wear first anyway, as
these tend to wear quickest and usually cause steering problems.
If you are sure the problem is in the back, check the rear shocks, coil
springs, and axle-carrier links. Also make sure the wheel studs are in
properly.

All E28 and E34 5 series have notoriously sensitive front ends. The
most likely suspect parts are the upper and lower control arms,
followed by the tie rod ends. Looseness an *any one* of these parts
will cause your problems.

If it's the rear that appears to be giving the problem then it is almost
certainly the subframe carrier bushes!

Re: unsteady E34!
Thanks everyone for your comments. I shall have a look at the various parts
this weekend.I'm sure now I'll be able to resolve the problem.
Thanks,
Azhar
