Nissan Maxima: Transmisson question for the NissTech

    Transmisson question for the NissTech

I was having a problem with my 96 Maxima GLE. If the car was still moving
(just under 10 mph) it would hesitate on acceleration. about 2 sec worth of
hesitation. I took the car to 3 transmission shops (one a Nissan dealer) and
the all told me that the tranny needed to be rebuilt. Oh BTW the car only
has 38,000 original miles. I did infact have the transmission rebuilt and
although it doesn't hesitate as bad it still displays the same symptoms.
Hesitates for just a moment then slams into gear, I assume 1st gear and then
    takes off.

Is this normal for a Maxima? I know these are excellent cars and I had
serious doubts that the tranny needed to be rebuilt. I know that the car
wasn't abused previously since it was owned by my grandmother.

    Thanks

My car would slam into gear and when changing gears. It was a very hard
shift and I thought something terrible was wrong when this happened.

My dealer changed a High Wattage Resistor for something like $5.00 parts,
    $20.00 labour.

Everything became smooth as silk again.

I'm not Nisstech - but in answer to your question, the behavior you
are experiencing is "normal" for the 4th Gen. auto. Maximas... I have
a 96 GLE, have had it since it had 40k on it - now its got 106k - the
shifts from 1-2 are hard, and the car hesitates before downshifting
from 2->1... eventually, when it does downshift, its with a bang...
many auto. Maxima owners have reported similar behavior... my car has
been to the dealer several times (while it was under powertrain
warranty) to document the hard 1-2 shift.. it always came back as
"within spec" and "thats how all maximas drive"... the delay/slam from
2->1 is just the way the TCM has been setup to operate.

What exactly did they rebuild anyway? - since it sounds like it was
    working fine before.

Totally agree, my '98 is just the same. On my way to work there is a
junction on a hill that I approach in '2'. As I accelerate away on the
hill the car momentarily 'hangs' before dropping to '1' and
accelerating. It feels much better on the flat.

From what the list intails valve over haul, nissan rebuild/over haul kit,
bands and a few other items. Over all its starting to sound like I got took.
Like I said I didn't think that a tranny with 38,000 on it needed a rebuild.
However there is a service bulliten that addresses this exact problem which
prompted me to go ahead with it.. Like I mention it seems to have helped a
lot but there is still some hesitate... but from what you are saying that
    might be normal.
