Ford: Transmission Question Mustang 71

Transmission Question Mustang 71
My son has a 351c 1971 Mustang Grandé (looks like a fastback).
We need an automatic transmission. The guy he talked to asked if the
transmission has a steel case (fmx tranny). So, he put a magnet on it and it
was steel. He said this is an expensive tranny to fix, buy and find. so he
offers to rebuild it w/towing for a hefty fee.
My question is: what models of automatic transmissions w/fit in it and
either slightly or not have to be modified, or is he yankin' his chain.
Thanx in advance,
Doug

a C-6 will bolt rite up to the 351C and is a lot easyier to find and fix

Re: Transmission Question Mustang 71
You mean a C4, as that the 351 has the small block transmission bolt
configuration.

C4 will bolt to it. The FMX is not all that hard to find nor is real expensive
to recondition. Suggest you check around.

Not to mention that a C4 isn't exactly horrible to rebuild,
(assuming you get a good tranny book & the right tools, )

Did he put the magnet on the CASE, rather than the trans pan? All stock pans
are steel...Another feature of the FMX is that it has ears and 4 external bolts
holding it to the bellhousing. I disagree with the above statement of the trans
being expensive to repair and to find...there are still many tens of thousands
of them still running in all types of 60's and 70's Fords.
Anyhow, any good transmission shop should have no problems rebuilding an FMX,
C4, or C6 transmission, whichever you have or you choose. With a stock engine,
the FMX is a fine unit, and should give years of good service.

The FMX seems to be more expensive to build because they
generally sustain more damage in a failure. The FMX is a
strong reliable trans. A good shop should be able to build
it unless the case is damaged which was not uncommon for
them. The C4 trans is the aluminum unit used in many of
those cars and will get the job done. It will not stand the
abuse that a C6 can behind that engine. The C6 is a bit
heavier that the C4 and requires a bit more engine power to
handle it. As long as the case is not damaged and the car
is driven sanely(?), I would opt to build the FMX. The
others will require other mods to complete the job which
will add to repair cost. If money is no problem and it is a
performance vehicle, the field is wide open for
improvements.

Also the FMX has a feature which is invaluable coupled to a 351c in traffic
ie it can take-off in 2nd if you so desire and stays in 2nd, so there's no
change-up--stop--moveoff-change up etc etc.
