Tire recommendations -- 2000 Tacoma ext cab 4WD
Hello group,
I have a 2000 Tacoma 4WD extended cab that came with stock Wilderness
AT P265/75R15 tires. The tires now have 70K miles and it's time for a
change. This is my first time in the group and I've read all the
articles on my server and I have seen some discussion of this issue,
but figured I'd go ahead and ask.
All the recommendations for this truck show a P225 instead of a P265.
A P225 is what is shown on the door plate of my truck.
All the P265's I've seen are tires with big (and loud) tread. Most of
my driving is highway. Very rarely do I go off-road. Occasionally I'll
hit a gravel or dirt road, but not very often. In Kentucky, we get
the occasional snowfall that I need to navigate through. The factory
tires are very noisy on the highway and I'm looking for some sort of
all-season tire that will be quieter, yet will take me through the
snow in the eastern Kentucky mountains.
There are a lot more options available for P225's than P265's.
Is there any reason why I should NOT opt for the P225's, even though
that's not what my truck came with from the factory? Will installing
P225's significantly affect my speedometer calibration?
I guess basically I'm looking for advice more on switching sizes than
an actual tire recommendation, since I'm going to go with a tire
that's reasonably priced with a long treadlife (like a Michelin if I
can find one at Sam's Club.)
Thanks for any advice you folks can offer!

Yeah, what he sez.
FWIW, I'm real pleased with the Michelin LTX M/S in 265/75SR16 LRE I put on
my 'Burb. So much so that I pulled them off and put the old Big O Bigfoot
banana skins back on the thing before tradin' it off. They'll be going on
the '04 Tundra pretty soon here. They rate high in the survey (the number
of reporting miles in the survey is almost 20 million).
The Michelin Cross Terrain would be a good match for your driving as well,
maybe even better.
For your 15" rim size, I'd look at sticking with the 265 with maybe dropping
the aspect ratio from a 75 series to a 70 series.

Re: Tire recommendations -- 2000 Tacoma ext cab 4WD
I just replaced the 255's on my '93 with 225 Michelin X radial
LT's. They were $102 something apiece at Sam's. I'm very happy with
them.

Re: Tire recommendations -- 2000 Tacoma ext cab 4WD
I just bought Michelin LTX M/S, best truck tire for mostly highway and a bit
of off-road.
Used to have the wranglers gs-a, they were not very good.
It's snowing right now, 2feet on the ground already and the tires are
sticking great even in 2 wheel drive.

In article <com>, H Hornblower says...
Do you notice any difference in your speedometer calibration?

I'm sort of in the same boat with you.
I'm driving an '00 Prerunner with the same size shoes yours has at the
moment (265/75R/15), except my truck has around 48k on the OEM Goodyear
Wrangler RT/S set that came from the factory. ( a mediocre 340 A B tire).
I've got another 10k to go, probably, before I have to buy another set.
I've never been one to complain too loudly as long as I can clear 40-45k
min. on a set of tires (no off roading), but I'm not very happy with the
Goodyears, and was looking at the possibility of a narrower or shorter tire
size (noise, mileage, hydroplaning, etc.). I'm over here in middle TN.
With regard to your speedo calibration question, have a look at this chart
on the Goodyear RT/S tires. Compare the 225/75R/15 overall diameter and
'revs per mile' to the size we're both running now, and you'll see there's a
helluva difference (at least in my mind, but what do I know.). My truck is
also badged with the 225 spec in the door jamb. Perhaps that's a default
size for the standard Tacoma. (?)

I'll probably stay with the 265 spec when I buy. From what I've read over
at tirerack, I'll likely go with the Yokohama, the Pirelli, the Michelin CT
SUV, or the Dunlop RR A/T, as (to me) they each have a nice look and are no
less than a 500 A B rated tire.
Good luck and post back with what size/brand you go with and how you like'em
up there in KY.

Thanks, but that really doesn't help me in the decision on whether to
switch from the stock P265s to the recommended P225s.

Found this link very useful in determining what effect changing tire size
has on the speedo.
