Ford Explorer: Third Rear Shock?

Third Rear Shock?
Hello, I noticed recently during a rear brake job that my '98 EB AWD
Explorer has three rear shock absorbers, two normal size and one smaller
size on the passenger side. Is this really a third shock or does it
serve some other purpose?
I could not find it listed in any online parts diagrams, though I'm not
really sure what it's called. Is this a dealer part or should I be able
to find it OEM at my local part house(s)?
Thanks,
Steven

Re: Third Rear Shock?
Your are talking about the "lateral shock" a sideways mounted shock
that is connected to the axle housing and body frame. It's purpose
according to the Ford service manual is to reduce lateral movement
relative to the rear axle and body frame. It's only on 4-door models,
most likely because they are longer.

Re: Third Rear Shock?
When I order Bilstein shocks from Performance Products website, I
ordered the lateral shock also.
