    Thinking of buying 1990...

I'm thinking of buying a 1990 6-spd coupe and am looking for input, words of
wisdom, or know problems with this year/model. I'm not new to Vettes but my
previous one was a C3, so my experience probably doesn't apply too much.

The one I'm considering has 165,000 miles and has all the extras, including
many new parts (clutch, starter, mufflers, tires, brakes, belts, exhaust,
bearings, etc.). The car sounds very clean and I plan on driving over to see
it this weekend. I think I'm not a mechanic but consider myself reasonably
competent when assesing a car and it's owner. Since the car is a couple of
hours away, I want to make the most of my visit. Can anyone provide me with
specific info, concerns, or things to check when assesing this car? The
owner is asking mid $6K, so it seems like a good price, especially
considering online prices of similar cars. I believe that it's been a
California car all its life, currently residing in northern CA. Its white
with red leather, which is not my favorite, but what the hell its a Vette...

    Thanks in advance!

    David, et al -

Fall and winter are the best times to purchase a Corvette, of course. I may
be speaking from a somewhat biased position, but I recently purchased a
lower mileage (72K) 6-speed 1995 coupe for $10K with a new set of Goodyear
F1s on chrome rims (285/40-17 fronts and 315/35-17 rears).

Sure, it was far from a 100-point car at that price, but '95s and '96s
inherited a few features previously reserved for the ZR1 (Bosch ABS, ASR,
12" brakes, & rear fascia) and the sequential fuel injected LT-1 (upgraded
in 1994). If ya want a C4, the later years are the most evolved and they
passed along their best traits to the C5.

This is actually my first 'vette, after many years of owning a few slightly
more exotic species (in descending order of coolness), including: a Ferrari
    365GT4BB and a Mercedes-Benz 190SL with a 271HP Ford V8 under the hood. I
also had a DeLorean, an Alfa Romeo Veloce, a couple of Mazda RX-7s (one of
which is still my "winter beater" after 150K), a Datsun 260Z and a 280Z, a
Lotus-Cortina, a '67 Mustang, an Austin Healey, and a gaggle of other less
    exotic iron.

I was pleasantly surprised when I achieved 30mpg with my C4 on a recent
trip. That is better gas mileage than my RX-7s have gotten with a strong
tail wind! I refer to the 'vette as my "economy car ... with a bad
    attitude"!

The price sounds reasonable if all the parts have indeed been replaced as
you described. If the owner can provide the receipts, then I would go for
    it.
