Jeep: Taking the doors off

    Taking the doors off

While I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this question, having read
several replies already, and been working at it since I got the darn thing,
I figured I'd ask anyways, in case someone has some brilliant insight.

I'm trying to get the doors off my '97 TJ. Bought it last October, and been
trying off and on ever since. Managed to get the driver's side door off with
some elbow greese, and some penetrating oil (comes off much easier now that
I've had it off), but for the life of me, I can't seem to get the passenger
    side door off.
I've tried penetrating oil. I've gotten three guys to pull up on it, and
rock it back and forwards (almost got the wheel off the ground doing that),
even gone so far as to hit it with a hammer.

I finally decided that if I was going to have a hope of getting it off, I'd
have to remove the hinges, then see about getting the hinge apart with it
off the Jeep. Got the mirror off, no trouble, but for the life of me, I
can't get the bolts underneath the loosen (started to tear the head on one
when I gave up). Managed to get the lower hinge off with little trouble.

    Any tips?

    Dale

Why can't you get the hinges off? Are you stripping the bolt? I just
recently had a problem with trying to get the windshield bolts off
(putting on a rack). I was using one of those multi size torx sets and
you can't get a lot of leverage with it. I ran to sears and got a
socket and popped them right off.

Yep, one of those multi-size sets. It was all I could get. I'll keep looking
for the right size (maybe next time I'm in Sears). T-40 right?

    Re: Taking the doors off

    Hi Dale,
If the door opens and closes that means that the pin is indeed moving within
the hinge and really should just come out. There are 2 things that would
    cause difficulty:
    1) you might still have the nut on - I know - obvious, but I need to say it
    <grin>
    2) you are not lifting perfectly straight upwards. If you lift on the door
at its end you are binding the hinge, creating difficulty. On my TJ I grab
the mirror stalk right at the door (standing outside) and the interior door
handle and lift straight up, moving the door slowly if I need to (I usually
    just lift it right up).

I have since just left the nuts off forever, as my doors go on and off all
    the time depending upon rain.
    Hope this helps,
    Tomes

    Re: Taking the doors off

Yep the nuts are off, haven't put them back on since I took them off the
    first time .

The pin on the top rotates with the bottom part of the hinge, the pin on the
bottom rotates with the top part of the hinge. Neither pin comes out of the
    hinge.
On the other door, both pins come out with the top part of the hinge, and
    neither pin will move.

My feeling is that the top pin is seized to the bottom part of the hinge,
which means that the door can open and close, but as soon as you try lifting
the door, you're just ramming the bottom part of the hinge in to the top
part (although there is no measurable motion anyways), which now that I
think about it isn't really putting any pressure on where it is bound up
    anyways.

Yeah, man. Get a socket. You can get so much more leverage on those
suckers. Spray some stuff on them too... CDR... or whatever it's
called. WD40. Those multi size things are crap for frozen bolts.

Man I wish I'd known I could get a socket for it. I wouldn't have wasted my
time (and damaged the bolt in the process). Got the socket the other day,
and managed to get 2 out of 3 of the bolts out. Looks like I'm going to have
to drill the third one (glad all this mess I'm making is covered up by the
    mirror...),

Yep. I nearly stripped a bolt for the windshield mount (I installed
the Olympic rack). Got the socket and it popped right off.
