BMW: Supercharger for E46

Supercharger for E46
I'm seriously considering supercharging my 2002 330Cic sometime in the next
month or so (And, no I don't just want to buy an M3 instead). I've had prior
Vortech supercharger experience on my former '92 Mustang GT, and because of the
outstanding and reliable results I achieved with that car, I'll probably go
with the ESS kit in order to get another Vortech blower.
However...I have no experience, nor have I heard or read much from anyone about
supercharging BMWs. If anyone has any stories, tips, or recommendations from
personal experience with a supercharger and a bimmer (positive or negative)
please share them. Post or email. Thanks in advance.

A warranty is a terrible thing to waste ;-)

Re: Supercharger for E46
Adding that doesn't void your whole warranty.

Oh try E46Fanatics.com
They have had one installed and talks about the performance.

Re: Supercharger for E46
No, but it may well void any coverage on the drivetrain...

I'm interested to know why you want to do this over getting an M3.
I'm considering this also and my reasons are:
a) Noise - the M3 is much much noisier engine-wise than the others.
b) Reliability - regular 3-series parts are easy and cheap to find if
anything needs replacing. Ok so the M3 might be engineered to be more
reliable but that's not really the impression I get so far.
c) I like to tinker with cars.
d) Some people think the M3 is a bit of a "poseurs" car. Some people
think I'm a poseur in my 10 year old 325i but there you go :-)
Downsides are no six speed, no LSD.

Those are basically my reasons. Additionally, I may be in the minority here,
but I actually prefer the styling of my 330 to what I deem to be a way too
boy-racer looking M3. I don't like the overall swelled look of the car, the
chrome fender inserts, the busy-looking wheels, the modified ricer-like front
and rear (what are those heinous holes about?) fascias, and the extra ~$13K I'd
have to pay for that car. If I can achieve an equal level of straight-line
performance from my car, I prefer to go that route as opposed to purchasing a
car that does not appeal to me as much as the one that's already in my garage.
I like the fact that my 330 has a very classic yet sporty look that manages to
turn heads everywhere I go without looking like a race car. I also like that
ride that 330 gives me. It has the sport package, so I get all the handling I
need without the bone-jarring ride of the M suspension paired up with the 19"
wheels featuring about an inch of sidewall rubber. I've heard a lot about E46
M3 reliability issues. Anything from rough idle to engine failure. I don't
want a car that I have to baby and constantly bring back to the dealer for the
valve adjustments and such.
I'm not really concerned about the warranty. I highly doubt that 7-8lbs of
boost will propel connecting rods through the oil pan. The car has already
used 30K of the 50K miles of the warranty, and I haven't had a single problem
with anything. It is unlikely that something major will go wrong that has not
already surfaced after 30K miles, and go wrong before 50K. Also, even with the
blower, if..say..a window motor breaks, I doubt the dealer will refuse to fix
it on the count of the charger under the hood. The blower itself comes with
its own warranty, and for you warranty-worriers, many supercharger retailers
will warranty the portion (powertrain) of the factory warranty themselves for
the remainder of time/mileage that you had remaining. In my case this is only
20K miles, which at my current pace will be only another year or so.
As I stated in my original post, I had a Vortech supercharger on the 92 Mustang
that I used to own. I put 80K miles on that car with the blower and did not
have a single problem with that car related to the drivetrain or the blower
itself. I doubt any new M3 can go that long without a bunch of trips to the
service bay. If/when the blower does fail, it can be rebuilt by the
manufacturer for about $1K, and it'll be good for another 100K miles or so. So
Basically, I have had great experience with forced induction in the past, and
I'm looking to blow my 330 for that, and the aforementioned reasons. Oh yeah,
and I'll still have about $7-8K in my pocket that BMW would take away from me
in exchange for the M Car.
Thanks to those who provided me some leads on the information I'm seeking. No
thanks to those who felt the need to reprimand me for voiding MY warranty on MY
car.
Happy Motoring to all...

I know what you mean, although I found the M3 ride perfectly fine but
it did have the standard 18" wheels. As for it being in for valve
adjustments ...er... it has hydraulic lifters so I don't know what
you've heard there. Other engine & drivetrain worries I reckon might
be founded though. Buying a used gearbox say for a regular 3 series
is going to be about 1/10th the cost for an M3 one.
M3s should hold their value more though so cost-wise there may not be
much in it as your supercharger won't be worth hardly anything once
you've bought it.
