Steering Klunking in 2006 Malibu
Hi,
Has anybody had the problem of their steering making a klunking noise
when you turn? Especially going slow, or parking.
The dealer replaced the steering column at first, but it continued.
Then they put in some kind of "special" lubricant that they said GM
recommended. That quieted it down for a few months, now it's klunking
again.
Sounds like they just don't want to spend the money to fix it right.
Anybody know what that is?

Had same problem with 2006 Malibu Maxx a couple of months
ago.....................only noticable when turning at slow speed.
Dealer lubricated something called the 'intermediate steering shaft' and the
problem went away.
I think there is also a GM service advisory about this but I have not seen
it.

I had the same problem with my Impala. mentioned it to my dealer and he
said it is common. Said it posed no safety issue at all. Apparently the
fact that the steering mechanism not only has to turn in both directions,
but also be able to move up and down based on road fluctuations, there is a
"boot" or "collar" that starts to rub and pop and make the noise.
I had planned to get mine fixed as I have an extended warranty, but after an
additional 10K miles, it has stopped. I'm thinking perhaps whatever was
wearing (or worn) has managed to smooth off the rough edges, or perhaps rub
itself so much that it's actually lubricated itself.
Don't know if these your issue and mine are the same, but I suspect they
are.

Sometimes a bad or dry upper strut bearing will cause this.

I have an 07 Malibu SS and have been waiting for about a month for a
new steering shaft. I was told that the current problem poses not
safety risks, that it's just annoying. I'll make them fix it anyway.
