    starting troubles -- 1997 Tacoma

    Hello,
My 1997 Toyota Tacoma v6 ext cab recently started clicking when I turn
the key. I sometimes have to turn the ignition 10+ times to get my truck
started. By no means am I a mechanic, so that is why I am asking this. To
me the starter is obviously going bad or a part inside the starter is going
bad. What is the cheapest way to get this fixed? Are there any suggestions
that you can give me before I get raped at a mechanic? Is there a
possibility that another part has gone bad causing this?

    Thanks for any advise!

I had the same problem on my 1996 Tacoma. The problem is in the starter.
It will have to be replaced. You could rebuild it, but it would probably be
cheaper to buy a rebuilt one. It is not a hard job. You go in through the
drivers side wheel well. The part cost me $177 dollars. Takes about 2 to 3
    hours. Good luck.

Cheapest option is to rebuilt the starter, or buy a cheap rebuilt starter.
Personally, I opted for a rebuilding my Toyota starter over getting another
    brand of rebuilt.

Its a relatively easy and inexpensive repair you can do to the starter, assuming its the classic worn copper contacts inside the solenoid:

I agree, it sounds like the starter contacts. Same problem I had with my 96
T100. The biggest problem is getting the starter out. The dealer can do it
    for a little over a $100
