    Speeding ticket

Yesterday, in sunny western new York, I got my first ticket driving my 73.
Anyone have an idea what the fine is for 80mph in a 55mph zone in NY State?
Should I just mail it in and be done with it?

Oh. boy. just wait till "dave" reads this one...

I don't know what the fine is, but in NY it's likely to be steep.
25mph over the limit is a couple of hundred bucks in WA...

You should probably go to court and see an arbitrator. There's a good
chance that whatever the fine is you can get it reduced. I wouldn't
bother fighting the ticket though, you're not likely to win that
    fight.

Sorry for hear of your misfortune Ken. Here is OH, that's probably a
$125.00 tab. The cleanest way is just mail it in - BUT - if you can
mail it in make your check out for $1.36 more than they want. I did
that last year and apparently it screwed-up their system real bad and
the ticket NEVER got matched up with my license.

    Good luck.

That's also a good way to end up with your license revoked for
    "non-payment"....
Which can be an absolute major nightmare to get resolved.

I can't say from experience but +25mph is reckless driving, steep
fines and not a good affect on your cost of insurance. I don't know if
they'll report it to your state/ins. co. if you just mail it in or not.

    Every state is different, but......
Was it county, city or state issued?
This will make a difference only because of jurisdictional issues as to who'll
    prosecute.

Was it radar? Handheld? When was the gun last calibrated? When was the officer
last recertified? Did he/she have the fan on for the heater/air conditioner?
(they'll pick that up...trust me...I've done it) From which direction were you
clocked? If it was from the front, was there a vehicle...say, a semi, with a
larger reflective frontal area behind you and did the officer actually clock
the truck and not you? Doppler radar reflects off the largest, most reflective
target. If it was lidar, you're likely screwed.

In any case, I'm not advocating taking this to court and wading through all the
"reasonable doubt" issues I just raised, but:

Call the prosecuting body. State's att'y, etc. Tell them you want to plea the
case for something with no points. They can site you for improper equip, etc.
Take it away from being a moving violation and it doesn't hit your insurance or
    your license.
Forget the dough. If it costs you 5 times as much as the ticket, rack that up
against a moving violation in a Vette and see what it does to your insurance
premiums. (depending on your company, your age, your record, etc)

I'm not a lawyer and I'm not giving legal advice. I'm an ex-cop and I'm still
not giving legal advice...only points to ponder.

    Later-

    bj
