Well, isn't it that the hoop scoop itself is directly attached
to (what was once) the carb, and thus features a very direct path
to the rest of the intake tract?

I believe the name "shaker" comes from the motion of the hood
scoop - since it's attached the engine, it'll move around as the
    engine shakes.

The original "Shaker" is a hood scoop that is attached to the top of
the air cleaner/carburator. A hole is cut in the hood and the scoop
protrudes out of the hole in the hood. The hood scoop is prone to
shake a little, particularly when cold or reving the engine, therefore
it was named the "Shaker hood scoop" by engineers at Ford. The
"Shaker" was an option on late 60's/early 70's Mustangs and
    Torinos(and possibly other models).

Check out http://www.fordramair.com for a good look at the Shaker
and also take a look see at my pics to see a "original" Shaker hood
    scoop on my 1970 Mach I 351C @

The best known shaker hoods were the 70's Trans Am Firebirds, made really
famous by 'Smokey and the Bandit'

Say what you will, but Ford offered the shaker only 3 years, Trans Am had it
for 10 years. I love Mustangs but I have a special place in my heart for
the Trans Am--this beast kept the Muscle car alive during the dark days of
the 70's, when Mopar quit with the Charger/Chalenger Muscle cars, and the
mighty Mustang became a dressed up Pinto. Granted, GM has slayed their
Muscle cars; there is no more Camaro or Firebird, and the Mustang rides
high, but the Trans Am is second to the Mustang -- the Mustang started the
pony car movement, the Trans Am kept it alive.

Sad but true. Without the Trans Am we would have never had those 70's
cinematic masterpieces, Smokey & the Bandit.

Hey -- Lets not forget that thanks to the Firebird we also got that
great 80's TV show Kinght Rider. Without that there would have been
no David Hasselhoff and with out him there would have been no
    BayWatch!!!

I agree with crediting Pontiac for keeping the IMAGE of performance
alive, if not the reality. How many years were the Trans Am's scoops
even functional? Not more than two or three as I recall. So the
shaker "scoop's" bogosity factor is right up there with the infamous
"Screaming Chicken" decals that shared space with those shakers for a
few years in the late '70's.

More Pontiac bogosity: that the Trans Am package -- shaker scoop, air
extractors, front and rear spoilers, aero "spats" on the wheel
openings -- was intro'd as a '70 1/2 to homologate those features for
SCCA Trans Am competition. Yet the motor they put under the hood for
racing was the 302 Chevy small block, not a destroked variant of the
Pontiac 400 used in the production cars. Pontiac represented to the
SCCA that some "Canadian" model of the Firebird came with the Chevy
302 from the factory. The SCCA was eager enough to have Pontiac's
participation in the race series that they signed off on it.

    Re: shaker hood

In 1967 John Fitch put a "shaker" scoop on a SOHC inline six Pontiac Firebird, modified
the suspension etc. He called it the Fitchbird. Thereby "scooping" all the automakers.
However things sticking up through hoods was not new even then as we all know!
BTW Fitch is a very interesting fellow. If you survived a crash into impact absorbing
"barrels" on the highway then you have him to thank. He helped develop them after his
teammate and 80+ people were killed at LeMans in the 50's by their teams Mercedes ( ending
Mercedes' LeMans effort till quite recently) StuK

It is basically the same kit you can buy from CDC and put onto a GT. Matter of
fact, CDC is the source (vendor) for shaker on the '03/'04 Mach 1.

Beyond the looks of shaker, the Mach 1 starts with a more powerful V8 than
what is used on a GT. That is really the edge the Mach 1 comes with.
