Your dealer is full of shit. The performance package comes only with
the 6 speed - automatics *not available* - all you have to do is go to
bmwna.com and configure a 330i.

scarcity of 330i performance package
The local dealership told me today the (US) 330i performance package
was limited to 3000 total cars: 1000 manual, 2000 automatic, and that
"there would be no more after that". He also said that this 3000 total
would be "some 2003's, some 2004's" (ie: it wasn't 3000/model year but
3000 total)
That's the first I heard that this was a limited edition deal. Can
anyone verify that this is true? I had been assuming this was an
option that would not only be available now but 6 months from now and
even a year from now. I've been thinking of not buying until after the
first of the year but would hate to miss out on this package.
I'm wondering if the dealer's just trying to make a sale or being
straight up with me. He seemed uncharacteristicly knowledgeable about
the car for a sales person so I'm inclinded to believe him.

You know, I knew that. I've (re)configured my 330 on their web site
probably a hundred times and know what few options are available by
heart. It just sounds convincing when somebody with a bmw logo on
their shirt says something. Why is it that dealerships can't seem to
hire knowledgeable people? The problem is, dealerships don't hire "car
people", they hire sales people.
That still doesn't answer my question about the 3000 unit limit. Is
that a hard and fast "3000 performance packages and that's it", or is
it more of "we've planned to build 3000 this year and will plan to
build that many next year too"? I'm trying to figure out if I should
plan on buying in the next couple of months or if I'm probably ok to
wait until the start of the year.
