Corvette: Runnin' hot

Runnin' hot
My C4 seems to be running hot. But its odd. When I am just driving around
town it doesn't seem to be a factor, or it doesnt have enough time to warm
up. I'm not sure. But when I get right on the free way to go to work in the
morning after about 5-7 miles my water temp gauge is up about 3/4. But
when I get off the freeway and get into town it drops down to where it
should be on the cool side! Sometimes in town it will run cool, or other
times it will run hot. Tonight as it was running typically hot, temp up
3/4, I decided to try something: I turned on the heat to max and the blower
to full and sure enough within 15 seconds the temp dropped and it was
running nice and cool. Now its never actually run hotter than 3/4, so its
not like the car is over heating on me. Too me it Sound as though I might
have a clogged radiator or a sticking thermostat. Water pump is newer so I
know its not a case of that failing. Any ideas?

Re: Runnin' hot
Around 40-45 mph your radiator fan(s) usually do not come on (by design).
Take the top plastic part that's on top of your radiator off so you can see
between the radiator and the A/C condenser, you might have a bunch of leaves
and papers and other "road junk" blocking the air flow. Take an air hose and
blow air from the engine side towards the front of your Vette.
I installed a new radiator in my 88 last year. I did the above after driving
for a year and you would not believe the junk that I found.
Good luck

Re: Runnin' hot
Classic symptoms of a clogged up radiator. Good call. Been there, done
that, got the tee shirt, etc., etc. If it's still in OK shape you can
prolly get it boiled out. It would be a good idea to change the t-stat at
the same time.

Re: Runnin' hot
Never change a thermostat without changing the pressure cap. I cleaned mine
out just before we went on color tour and it was full of trash when I got
back, 1,100 mile. The only reason I looked that soon was I hit a deer, was
taping up the broken plastic front end until I get the new bumper cover and
a few other parts. Bad day. ;-{{

Re: Runnin' hot
Mine used to run hot in town if in a lot of slow traffic in the summer
(Florida, brutal heat-humidity). I changed the t-stat,
both my fans run from the go down here,
flushed the radiator,
checked out the front of the radiator and pulled all the leaves and plastic
out (not much really there),
read posts of several others with similar problem so I just thought I would
have to live with it.
Then I read [posted on this group]
to rinse the radiator (outside) and it made a big difference.
I did that last year and it was the remedy for me. Even though I couldn't
see anything on the radiator, road dust, dirt must've gotten on the fins and
insulated it enough to keep the heat in the radiator. I just used a regular
garden hose and sprayed it from the fans towards the front of the car and
then loosened the covers to get between the radiator and a/c condenser, then
did it both ways. Hot summer driving in traffic is not a problem anymore. I
used to have to turn the a/c off to keep it from overheating. That blows
when its so hot out.

Re: Runnin' hot
I ran into something similar on my '94 6 speed in the spring.
The Hypertech T-Stat was stuck open, plus the coolant wasn't looking
the best. Apparently the water wasn't staying in the radiator long enough
at highway speeds with the T-Stat stuck open.
So I removed the T-Stat and flushed the cooling system,
the ran cooling system cleaner for a couple days. Flushed again
and replaced the T-Stat with a new Hypertech, quality coolant.
And all is well.
Be sure to use the two bleeders to get all the air out of the cooling
system after flushing and filling.
And like the other poster stated, check for leaves and junk behind the
shrouding too.

Re: Runnin' hot
Had the same thing in my c3 and all I did was change the thermostat. My new
one is higher flowing than the old one as well. Put your old and a new
thermo into some boiling water, youll find the old one leaks even at cold
temps, opens up a bit even at low temps- keeping your engine cold for a long
time. When things get hot, it fails to open much. Where as the new one
stayes closed, then suddenly opens up at the right temp. This is what u
should prolly look at first, as its a simple mod.
