Jeep: Rubicon stuck in pard

My friend just bought a 2003 Rubicon, Tomb Raider if it matters. It is
stuck in park in a way that will not allow the release button to be
depressed completely. Is this a common problem for this vehicle? Does
anyone know what causes it or how to correct it?
