    re: rubbish - SO OT

I was somewhat kidding about that last coda. I'm not necessarily sure
the rest of the world should be responsible for constantly helping, and
cleaning up after, a continent chock full of countries whose leaders are
murderous despots. With all the natural resources Africa possesses they
could pay off their debts themselves. Instead it's all stuffed into the
pockets of the Amins and the Mugabes, etc. (and that's just the *past*
    group).

I didn't think there should have been tsunami relief either. Natural
disasters happen. We wiped out tribal civilizations in those countries
with our "relief". People who had never seen a single person from the
outside world suddenly being given Western-style food and clothing,
sometimes being plied with alcohol or cigarettes by photographers
wanting a shot, that's fucked up. In so many other ways now, those
    people are dead anyway.

But I donate to charities when I can. I've never passed a homeless
person or a Salvation Army bucket without handing something over. And
I've taken charity, too, I was nearly homeless myself once. I volunteer
at a cat rescue house, 24 cats at all times, taken off the street and
running around free in a cool old house until they're adopted. I'd turn
my life upside down for animals. After the race tomorrow I'll be
heading off to clean litter boxes. Animals are a lot better than
    people. Most of the time.

So, to recap: sometimes I can be extremely compassionate, and sometimes
    I am ruthlessly dismissive.

Gosh, sounds bi ... ah, what the hell.

I was really just hoping there was going to be a good show, particularly
the PF reunion. Now I know I'll be lucky to see/hear one song of it,
thanks to MTV's usual hatchet job. One song, a couple of bubblehead
announcer comments, five or six commercials, more bubbleheaded
announcing from another city, one song.

Gag. I was praying for BBC coverage. Guess I'll have to wait for the DVD.

Well. THIS is about as off-topic it gets! Good day, everybody!

Not that I'm all that disappointed in the starting grid for tomorrow,
mind you. 4 and 6 is definitely workable.

How many songs did they end up playing?

So weird how different people view different things; here's what
somebody at AP had to say about, a pretty limp sum-up:

"The day's most anticipated musical event, a reunion by Pink Floyd, felt
ragged and a little sad. One could only guess whether formerly feuding
Roger Waters and Dave Gilmour wondered about their wasted years as they
looked across the stage at one another."

I could maybe see a little truth in it, though. But what wasted years?
Both entities had excellent albums and solid tours. This guy is kind
of a cynic (I wouldn't know anything about that, of course). I"ll be
checking some of the major PF sites to see what they felt about it.

My dream, though, would be for them all agree to spend some time really
getting it together, then go out for one last glorious tour. A final
tour, and then that's it. Not like the Milking Stones, last tour after
last tour. Just one tour, nice and comprehensive. I'd pay $$ to see
that, and travel just about anywhere I had to.

Forget Syd, Dan. I know of some web sites that discuss his whereabouts,
etc., and it doesn't sound like he'll ever be back among us ... sadly.
He's done some writing, but I don't think he's up to being in public.

Breathe, Money, Wish you were here & Comfortably numb...the last three were
    pretty predictable really.

I thought the sound was pretty tight under the circumstances. Guitar solo on
Numb was bit shortened from the utterly mega monster version he used to do.
Sounded good with the two of them doing the vocals on it though. Dunno what
people expected really - after Robbie had lifted the roof off the place &
the Who had done their thing Floyd was always liable to *seem* a bit flat.
Seemed a bit out of context I s'pose really - especially without the full-on
    Floyd monster light show.

Low points of the day? Snoop Dog idiot and his "Motherf$kjin' Shite" rap on
the TV around 6 O'clock when small kids were bound to be watching. Mariah
Carey was just bland (as would be expected), Snow Patrol didn't do
themselves justice, Velvet Revolver bombed. Travis were a bit flat. Ms
Dynamite should have been struggling to get a hanger's on pass & shouldn't
have been allowed anywhere near the stage.

Madonna was great as were U2 (especially with Macca doing Sgt Pepper),
Coldplay & Keane. The Scissors were excellent as was Annie Lennox, REM & The
Stereophonics & Robbie managed to get more out the crowd in ten minutes than
most of the rest of them put togther,. Floyd were just Floyd - exactly what
would be expected. UB 40 were worth watching & the end (with Macca) was a
    bit cheesy.

Razorlight, Joss Stone & Elton played well but didn't really do it for me.

Watched the whole darn thing from beginning to end - worthwhile waste of a
    day!

You can watch some of it on the AOL website - can't figure out how to fast
forward to the bits you might actually want though.

OK, well at least I was able to see the first three and a tiny scrap of
CN until the bubbleheads cut in.

Didn't get to see a single shred of that, damn!

Wasn't all that impressed, but then again this is an affair that had a
different reason, I suppose. I've seen the Who numerous times and am
happy with that. Kind of interesting that Daltrey's not as interested
in keeping his gut in check anymore, but then ...

Hate to say it, but I love old-school rap and I was astounded to see how
few "MFs" they were able to bleep out. They actually panned around to
several young kids on their parents' shoulders! But, sorry, I thought
it was great. Wish Dr. Dre had been there with him.

"Death Row in the motherfuckin' HOUSE!"

I mean, your kids don't read this, do they?

    But she shook that booty!

Didn't get to see them, thanks MTV - glad I saw them at Coachella.

I thought what I saw of them was weak - the vocal mix was terrible.
Highlight for me was seeing a Breitling on Slash's wrist amidst all the
    heavy metal adornery ...

She really rocked! I was very impressed. I think she was too; in the
interview afterward she said she was so stunned at meeting that young
African girl that she said she either was going to cry or rip it up.
Great to see she's still got it!

She is just so hot. I can't help myself. I'm a pervert. But she
really does have a great voice too.

Watching a rock show on a computer leaves me cold. I'll buy the DVD
when it comes out (hopefully NOT put out by MTV). But thanks!

I wonder if they'll actually pt a DVD out. It took them nearly 20 yrs to
    release Live Aid.

I can't even imagine hearing that in person. It's gut wrenching enough
thru stereo speakers. I would expect to literally collapse to the
ground sobbing if I ever faced it live.

I saw it done live around 7 or 8 years ago (the last tour). By the time you
get to that point in the show yr just so "Floyded out" that it just brings
a big old benign grin to the face accompanied by some gentle nodding of the
    head (!)

Just mentioning: there is a quite funny (and good) disco version of
Confortably Numb on the Scissor Sisters' last record.
