Corvette: rev limiter

    rev limiter

    Ok - 2004 Z06.

    I had a 92 vette prior to this. LT1.

The Z06 hits the redline WAY faster than my 92.

So, I've hit the rev limiter once or twice now. I realize it can't be
really good for the car, but for short hits, am I destroying the thing when
    I hit it?

Let's put it this way, I don't *use* it as a shift indicator. The damn Z06
runs the gears so quick, that I hit it sometimes under hard accel. When I
do, it's immediately shifted up or off throttle.

    Thanks!

p.s. did I mention that the Z06 is fast? And the gears are much better
    spaced/ratio'd than the 92's?

i don't believe you are hurting anything but i still wouldn't do it much.
the rev limiter either cuts your spark or your fuel when you hit it. maybe
even both. not sure exactly. sounds like your havin way to much fun with
    your Z06 though. my 95 6speed LT1 is a lot of fun even though it's only a
13.7 secong car in the 1/4 mile. still workin of that though. should be able
to hit the 12's after christmas.

I doubt very much that you're doing any damage. That's why the limit is
there and set where it is. Having said that the circumstances surrounding
the situation play an important part. Sitting with the car in neutral
bouncing the tach off the redline is a very dangerous practice. No load
spinning at high engine speed is very risky. Engines under load are at less
risk. I don't believe either situation causes undue wear, rather it's an
increase in probability of catastrophic failure, broken connecting rod, rod
bolt, spun bearing, valve float, lifter pump-up etc. Interestly, when we
used to see timing chain/sprocket failure it wasn't the engine speed on the
way up or at peak, they always failed when you took your foot off the pedal.
But remember, Play nice out there.

Play nice - Absolutely. Remember, it's not just you out there.

The first time I hit the rev limiter, was when I was taking my mother out
    for a spin.

She wanted to see how this car went.

So, I, Ummm, showed her. GRIN.

Anyway - during one run in 1st,2nd. I pulled hard up through 1st, and
    missed my shift into
2nd. And blipped the throttle while it was out of 2nd by accident. You
    know how missed shifts
go, your foot is pulling off the throttle almost before you're pushing down.
    But it definately hit
the Rev limiter for a fraction of a second.

When I did hit the shifts correct - she was ok through 1st - but when I
dropped it into 2nd, and it
hit like a ton of rocks, her "rev limiter" kicked in with "That's enough!!
    That's ok!!!". Definately left
her breathing heavy, and kinda amazed looking. GRIN. I think she enjoyed it
    though.

The second time, was coming out of "my sweeper".

In my 92, I could shift 1st, to 2nd and then leave it in third as I pulled
to about 75 or so. Quite fun.

However, in the Z06, leaving it in 3rd apparently is not what the beast
wants to do. Did everything ok
in 1st and 2nd and to 3rd. But in my habit to leave it in 3rd, I nailed the
rev limiter, for what seemed like 1-2 seconds. (probably only 1/2 second).

There was a definate lag between what I was "used" to, and maxing out 3rd.
Let's just put it this way, I was kinda
shocked that I hit the top of 3rd, and my brain took a moment to get over
"Oh my gosh! I just nailed the top of 3rd!!"

Probably should not have been playing that hard, but it was a clear road
    with no one around.

    Re: rev limiter

i used to hit the limiter a lot when autoxing, where the shift up and then
down would have cost more time than to ride it out just under the limit for
    a short while.

No issues with engine problems I assume?

    Re: rev limiter

i had my 89 for about 3 years with about 12-15 autox weekends/year without
any engine problems. put on 35k miles, and sold it with 65k on the clock to
another autox-er. as far as i know, it's still going strong, but i haven't
done autox for a couple of years.

The LS1 (and I'm assuming the LS6) rev limiter cuts fuel.
It's to prevent engine damage from overrevs.
I've bounced my LS1 Trans Am off the limiter a couple times at the
drag strip as well with no apparent after effects.

the two big no-no's I know of are:
Nitrous + stock rev limiter = lean = bad. (Very bad to keep spraying if
    there's no gas coming.)
Hitting the rev limiter from a botched shift - 1->2->3->2(instead of 4)
the ignition system may cut out but the engine's still going to hit 8000
until you get the clutch pedal in. Apparently this is a good way to
make your pushrods into neat curvy shapes.

You may need to revise your shift point downward by a couple hundred
rpm. By the time you see 6300 on the tach and lift off the gas and
pull the shifter handle, you might have actually hit 6600 and the
    limiter.
