Toyota: The rest of the Echo love story...

The rest of the Echo love story...

I got a call from the father(Very nice man) of the girl who hit my car, while
I was making a left turn (I didn't see her before I turned).

He tried to clean off the black smudges/scrapes on her bumper (it wasn't
dented, just tarnished, as was mine), but was unable to clean it, so they'd
    like it replaced.

No problem. I gave them the claim number and insurance agent to call.

    Everybody's fine now.

I very much love that car...

    Natalie

Wouldn't it be cheaper to pay cash rather than making an insurance claim?

Try to work it out between yourselves and the girl's preferred body
shop, without even telling your insurance company about it.

If it's just a paint smoodge, they can just inspect the bumper
structure underneath for damage (unlikely) and properly sand, prime,
and repaint the existing bumper cover.

Even if you don't file a claim, your rates can go up just because
they know about it, and if they file and pay a claim they almost
certainly will raise your rates - unless you are with a good company
that gives one 'gimme' before they nail you with a premium increase or
a non-renewal. They /will/ get their money back, with interest.

Insurance companies are your bestest best buddies in the whole wide
world when you are sending in money regularly - but as soon as you
need some of that money back, the gloves come off.

Good point Bruce. One of the reasons why I select a $500 to $1000
deductable for insurance since if it is a big item that needs fixing (bumper
assembly and body work), then its worth getting it done thru insurance. If
its like a scratch or broken windshield, then its better to pay and not tell
    the insurance about it.

It's scratched, the bumper has easily felt scratches in it. Besides, our
rates will go down as soon as we get out of this #1 high insurance rate state
    (AZ is higher than California)

    If
    not.
You'll probably find your rates will go up (for about five years) and it
will cost you three or four times as much as paying the repair
    out-of-pocket.
    But it's your money.
