Recommend Cold Air intake and exhaust for E39 528i?
Im looking for a low cost cold air intake? Also I am interested in a
cat back exhaust system. I want high flow, but not loud.
What other bolt on engine mods can anyone suggest?
thanks

Supersprint has good exhaust systems.
Other bolt-ons? A supercharger or turbo.
Give Dinan a call.

Somebody has to say it - sell it and buy one with a bigger engine.

Generally, these modifications, that don't produce much in the way of
actual power, are more for poseurs than for real performance freaks.
I'm betting he's never been to a driver school - or he'd know what
he's looking for. He just wants to impress his friends.

Thats a childish thing to say. I have a C5 corvette for serious fun
and serious mods. Im not looking to hot rod the 528. Just looking to
do the easy stuff (CAI, exhaust, software), and been done with it.
While I am very knowledgable on what mods do, and how modern engines
work, I just bought the bmw and dont know the BMW mod ins and outs as
far as bang for buck stuff, and the manufacturers out there. Thats
all I am asking.

Fair question. The (general) answer is that it's fairly hard to modify BMW
engines to provide more power, because they are already in a fairly high
level of tune. The intake already is a cold air system (the intake goes
to behind the grill). To fix the exhaust, you really need to replace the
entire thing - including the muffler and resonator - just adding headers
doesn't do much.
There have been other posts mentioning dinan (me) and others.
All those mentioned have all the info on their websites you need.
However, software only gives you 15-20hp, iirc. You have to add
much more than just the ecu program to get anywhere significant.
One thing that I'm surprised that CR didn't mention was to join
bmwcca - their magazine has ads for virtually everyone, which
is just what you want. www.bmwcca.org, iirc.

No, I think he's used to making significant improvements to others
cars for not necessarily much money and expects to be able to do the
same with his BMW. It's a reasonable expectation but proper BMW
engine tuning isn't really a d-i-y thing at the moment - you have to
cut your limbs off and give them to the likes of Dinan.

In which case I will offer an apology about 'sneaky lawyer'
qualifiers. I said *generally* above, and much of the reason is
coming out in the other replies to you. While reducing the airflow
restrictions('accidentally' leaving out the air filters) might have
made a significant difference on the showroom stock racing Camaro I
used to work with, it doesn't make much difference at all for a BMW.
It was the same team owner who discussed the differences a header
would make on a BMW I-6 like yours: again, not much. BMW intake
systems, heads, and exhaust systems are fairly well-developed and
well-matched, so you don't get much out of modifications unless you
start doing *serious* head work. The best 'bang for the buck' usually
comes with an ECU chip change. For this reason, most of those doing
BMW modifications such as you suggested really *are* poseurs. For
them, I also recommend the faux carbon fiber strut braces.
As for childish, maybe I am. I follow the wisdom found on a novelty
coffee mug a few years ago: "You're only young once, but you can be
immature forever." And, over the weekend, I spotted a new one on a
plaque: "If you've reached age 50 without growing up, you don't have
to."
