    Rather than fix the problem.....

AOL decided to punt. After missing about 50% of the messages over the past few
months I got this today when I pulled up good old AAF on bad old AOHell.

<<Please Note: The AOL Newsgroup service will be discontinued in early 2005.

For members using AOL over a dial-up connection, you will no longer be able to
access Newsgroups. If you have a separate high-speed connection, you can
contact your broadband provider to see if they offer Newsgroups. Newsgroup
services can often be accessed through a third party reader, such as Mozilla
    Thunderbird (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/thunderbird/).

Alternatively, you can access Newsgroups via Google at
    http://groups.google.com/.

    We apologize for this inconvenience.>>

I guess after 15 years it's time to move on..

You an otherwise bright guy: Why have you stuck with AOL, "the short
bus on the information superhighway", for 15 years?

    I've found Thunderbird to be not-ready-for-prime-time (Mozilla's
Firefox web browser is fantastic) and have used Earthlink (forget
where you're located) and Agent quite happily for quite some time now.

All of the message boards are being converted to web based. I
anticipate another mass exodus from AOL like there was 6 yrs ago or so.
I've considered it in the past, but it seems quite likely that I'll be
moving on as well. Just not sure where to go. One of the few good
things about AOHel is that all your mail is stored on your own
computer, so there's no memory limit for it. Frankly, I don't know
squat about any other dial up service and I need something for when I'm
    traveling.
This just sux. And so does Google Groups for that matter.

The only time that your e-mail isn't stored on your computer (as far as I
know) is with a web-based service such as Yahoo! or HotMail. Any regular
dial-up connection will save your mail to your HDD. IF you want national
coverage, look at EarthLink. I used them until I switched over to DSL a
    couple years back.
