Dodge: Position Sensor Dakota

Position Sensor Dakota
I'm the original owner of a 2001 Dakota with 69K miles Recently the truck
has an intermittent problem with starting. The starter cranks but the engine
just wont kick over. I was told I could have a bad Crank position sensor.
Can anyone offer me a suggestion as to what to do. I was told if I take it
to the dealer and they cant reproduce the problem, I'm still going to be
billed for a problem I still have. Also if it is the sensor, where can I
purchase on, is this a dealer only item?
Thanks

Re: Position Sensor Dakota
the dealer/independent has a scan tool that can be connected to the PCM and
all sensors monitored on start up, we can see if the crank sensor and
distributor are in sync and if not which one is not working, or you can thro
parts at it

Re: Position Sensor Dakota
Will the tech be able to see if the sensor is bad even if its during a
period when the truck and the sensor are working, or do I need to wait until
its acting up for them to check it? Thanks

Re: Position Sensor Dakota
it may have already set a fault code, but yes he will have to see it
happening, or you can request that they install the co pilot on your
vehicle, it is a device that monitors all sensors as you start the engine
and as you drive it, when the problem occurs, you push a button and it
records all that has happened, if it is a faulty sensor it will show up,
well worth paying the diagnostic charge if you want vehicle fixed
