Pls. advise - how to buy this auto ?
Bay Area, California
************************
My daughter would like to buy a car in the very near future.
She is thinking it is going to be a Lexus RX 300 SUV ( the smallest
Lexus SUV). I have looked on the web and almost 95% of these cars are
sold by dealers.
Is there a site that caters for sale by owner ? or has a lot of autos
for sale by owner ?
Is there a way to buy these cars at reasonable prices ?
She is thinking of buying a 2000 or 2001 or 2002 model with under
50,000 miles. (Maybe a bit more)
Where can she buy this car and not get gipped off ?
Are there any important points that she should keep in mind when
buying such a "used" SUV ?
Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.
Thanks for all your help,
Rita

Try recycler.com
Private party will be normaly be cheaper than dealer, but buyer beware,
ask questions and have a inspection done by mech.
You'll be driving all around town looking to the car.
Dealers will give you a warranty, they usually have lower milage and
cleaner cars, but charge you more than private party. They are open
everyday and nights, may have more selection at one location.
Car lots have mix condition, lease return, auction, repos, etc.
I think history is important, with private party they may have a good
history of repairs, oil changes, etc. So you know what maintenance need
to be done.
Dealers and Car lots won't have that. They pretty it up for sale.
So it depends on how much time you have.
Buying from private party you can expect to save from $1000 to $2000, so
keep that in mind and save that amount in saving for repairs, maintenance,
etc.

Re: Pls. advise - how to buy this auto ?
The best place to purchase a used RX is probably a Lexus Dealer, If it is
under 60K it should be certified which means you get a factory warranty for
3 years or up to 100K miles from your purchase date. It also would have to
go through a rigorous inspection process to be certified. As long as you
shop armed with valid information that you can get on the Web, KBB.com or
edmunds.com you should be able to find a great car at a reasonable price.
Just remember that you can negotiate with the dealer and get the price you
want. Yes buying private party can be cheaper but in the long run a
certified car may just save you money and headaches. Not to mention that
Lexus currently offers 3.9% financing for up to 66 months on a certified
car, something you can't get from a private party.

Minor clarification - on Certified Pre-owned, the 100k warranty refers to
total miles on the vehicle, not 100k from when it was purchased.
