Please help with strange C4 coolant leak/loss
Greetings,
My neighbor, who is computer challenged, has a C4 with a coolant leak.
I am posting this as a favor to him. I tried to get him to use this
newsgroup but he just doesn't get it. The symptoms are steam out the
tailpipes even when the exhaust is warm. And the car slowly loses
coolant. There are no visible leaks and no coolant dripping on the
ground. The car used to overheat until he put in a new radiator. The
strange thing about this is that the cooling system will stay
pressurized even after the car has not been started for two days. It
seems to me that after the car has cooled for two days there should be
negative pressure in the cooling system, not pressure. And if a head
gasket is leaking and pressurizing the cooling system then why is
coolant ending up in the exhaust? I know nothing about corvettes but
any advice about where to look or how to test would be greatly
appreciated.
Thank You,

He has head gasket leak or a cracked head. There is no easy fix here. In
need of shop time.

Re: Please help with strange C4 coolant leak/loss
Like the other poster said, he has blown a head gasket or cracked a head.
And it might just be a cracked head with the fact that he had a previously
continuing overheating problem and had to replace the radiator.

Have him pull the plugs and look at each. The cylinder with the leak will have a very
different look than the others. The plug will be very clean. The steam cleans all
residue of carbon from plugs and pistons. I cleaned (decarbonized) the generator on my
motorhome by spritzing water into carb. periodicly. Works like a charm.

Paul,
How does spritzing water into the carb have anything to do with the
generator ? Just curious. :- )

Thanks all for the replies. My neighbor doesn't want to face the fact
of a blown head gasket. Is there any other place he could have a leak
with the same symptoms? BTW, he did check the plugs and they all
looked the same. Not a single cleaner one in the bunch. I've seen that
scenario on one of my cars. It is amazing how clean the plug gets.
Must strip the oil off the cylinder walls too.
Thanks,

Re: Please help with strange C4 coolant leak/loss
It was a motorhome, which has an onboard generator for house power. The small engine
that was used on the generator would lose power quickly when carbon built up on the
piston. The water "cracks" the carbon off the piston and restores power. Worked for
several years.
