    Pinging 2004 Wrangler

    Hi,
I have a 2004 Wrangler Sport with the I6 and find that it pings when under
load, even when buying mid-range 88 octane fuel (the manual specifies 87
octane). There's no distributor, so I can't time it. The garage checked
the computer and says it's fine and that I need to buy premium. Has anyone
else had this problem and found a solution other than premium gas?

    Thanks in advance.

    John,

My 2 cents worth is that this is BS. Checked the computer? Ya, right.
When you say garage do you mean stealership. If so, take it somewhere else.
You should not have to put in premium fuel. It's under warranty, take it
back. Others may have a different view but I never heard of the I6 engine
    being cured with premium fuel.

    Things I would check...

-Lean fuel mixture (due to clogged injectors or a faulty sensor
somewhere or the computer being confused).

-Fuel octane too low (Unlikely with an I6).

-Improper ignition timing (does not apply to your vehicle unless the
    computer is WAY screwed up).

-Carbon deposits (they can remain incandescent and pre-ignite the
fuel). This isn't too likely on a vehicle that new.

-Incorrect Spark plugs (too hot a heat range).

    -Spark plugs not firmly seated.

-Valves operating at higher than normal temperature because of
excessive guide clearance or improper seal with valve seats.

-Engine Overheating (see this ALL the time with the I6).

-Ignition crossfiring due to bad/poorly run wires (Induced voltage in
spark plug wires that run parallel to each other for long distances).

That's all I can think of right now.

That is BS there is something wrong the garage can only check the codes,
they cannot read or check the actual data stream to see what is going on.
Take to some place that can such as the dealer they may need to reflash the
    OBC to correct the problem.

Or you could just have been getting some crappy gas change brands and do not
buy the no-name brand there are no guarantees.

Sometimes in the winter at low altitudes I get a very brief ping with
a 95 I-6 under load, but it never lasts, using bushgas regular. With
midgrade or even just 10-15% premium in the regular--never. You may
have an overlean, a hunk of carbon, or similar. Try the premium for
a coupla tankfuls and if you hear any ping at all, drive the thing
thru the garage's door and ask them to hire a real mechanic.
