Toyota: Paseo - Sudden increase in oil consumption!

Paseo - Sudden increase in oil consumption!
What's the likely cause of this with these cars? It's been using some oil
for a long time now but the last thousand miles or so it's gotten much
worse. The car has about 150K miles on it, but I've had other Toyotas go
much farther without consuming oil like this.

You should be able to tell whether it is burning oil from the exhaust. If it
is not burning oil, it is probably leaking oil somewhere.
150K miles is quite a bit without excessive oil consumption. You can't
expect every engine to last that long even if some others did. Sometimes it
is just luck.

Thanks. There's not leak according to my daughter. She's bringing it over
here for a look tomorrow and I'll try running a compression check too.

Perhaps the valve stem seals might need replacing? As Mark mentioned, if
the smoke is bluish/grey, this may be a sign of valve stem seals need
replacing.

Have you checked the PCV valve?
If blocked, could account for the increased oil usage, and they're
relatively easy and inexpensive to replace.

Re: Paseo - Sudden increase in oil consumption!
Change the PVC valve - they often stick open and the intake
system sucks in the oil fumes and mist. Try going to a
heavier weight oil -- say 20x50 (at least in warm weather).

PCV valves do not stick open. The valve spends most of its time in
the lowest flow position (manifold vacuum above 8") and if anything,
the valve will get clogged solid with hard sludge, which results in
no-flow. In this condition, all crankcase vapor has to exit via the
crankcase inlet hose to the air intake between the throttle body and
the air filter housing.

news:K7H8b.1419$news.pas.earthlink.net:
Even if it *did* stick open, unless it's really new vehicle, it won't even
idle.
Way, waaaay back, when the universe was young and dinosaurs roamed the
earth, I replaced my '75 2T-C's PCV valve with an aftermarket one. Some
time later, I pulled the rocker cover off to do a valve adjustment. I
happened to place the cover upside down on the driveway so the oil wouldn't
leak out eveywhere.
When I put it back the damn thing refused to idle. Everytime I took my foot
off the gas, it stalled.
What had happened? The PCV valve had a little ball bearing in it. When I
turned the cover upside down, the ball rolled away, leaving an open hole
from the crankcase to the carb under the throttle plate.

Re: Paseo - Sudden increase in oil consumption!
Seems like it's using a quart or so with each tank of gas. We bought the
car used and have stuck to the 3,000 mile oil change interval with 20W-50
since. It had 78K on it when we bought it and it was using some oil then,
about a quart every 1000-1500 miles. Unfortunately it seems the previous
owner may not have been very good about maintenance.

Re: Paseo - Sudden increase in oil consumption!
Whoa! Lets say you get 400 miles per tankfull. A quart of oil per
tank is WAY out of acceptable consumption. Now... if the valve train
area is filling with oil (not draining back quickly) then oil
consumption will occur. Simply resorting normal drain back will
improve yor consumption immensely. You need to have the valve cover
pulled for a sludge inspection and ... if the drain back passages
gooped up, get them cleared out.
