The old 912 that Squoke...
Hi, Folks -
I've got a '66 912 whose front suspension gets embarrassingly squeaky after
being driven around town a bit. This noise has become more and more
frequent over the last three years. Put the car away in the Fall, and
forget about it. Drive it in the Summer, and "Oh yeah - forgot about that"
sort of thing.
From what I can visually see (and from what I read in The 912 Handbook),
there are no grease fittings on the entire front suspension - supposed to be
lubricated for life it reads.
Another hint: when the front end gets to be squeaky, I can manually make it
squeak by turning the front wheels while the car is stationary.
The suspension itself and the steering rack all appear to be in good
mechanical working order; however I did notice that the rubber in the
suspension components are definitely showing their age. Could these
bushings be the cause of the noise?
Any thoughts/suggestions/comments would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks much in advance,
- Bill
