Toyota Trucks: Oil capacity

    Oil capacity

How much oil is too much? The manual that accompanied my 2003 Tundra V8
states that the correct amount to refill when changing the oil and
filter is 6.5 quarts. The dealership puts in 7.2 quarts and claims that
the manual is incorrect. Is 7.2 quarts too much oil, or just right?

My '03 Tundra 6 cyl also is incorrect regarding oil capacities in the
manual. To get to the 'fill' line, it takes additional oil.

    Re: Oil capacity

i'm not sure why some manuals have way wrong info about the oil capacities,
perhaps the content is not proof read before going to print. my 98' tacoma
manual said engine oil capacity was almost 2 US quarts over the max fill
    line.

oil change shops will go by the dip stick not by the manual unless you
    confront the issue.
manual is not the final word thou.

I had the same issue and allowed the dealer to do the first few oil changes
and EVERY time before I would leave them, I'd check the oil (old habit, I
used to be a QC service specialist, so I always check to make sure the
technicians did what they were supposed to...) and I'd always have to have
them add about a quart to get the oil to the top range of the dipstick. I
finally stopped letting them do it, even though they were doing them for
free, just because I got tired of their ineptitude. They kept wanting to say
that the manual was correct, and I would say, then do I have a defective
dipstick, and they would just mumble... what worthless bastards.

If you want something done right, then you have to do it yourself.

    Re: Oil capacity

i'm just wondering if "capacity" in the manual means "add this much", or
    means "max amount" ??

level on the stick between marks is considered "operational".

i could never understand why they don't just have a single dipstick mark
that says "fill to here" on flat level ground...

Is it possible that either the dipstick is mis-marked or the dipstick
    tube is too long?

    Or is that blaspheme??? :>))

Hey, I'm sure stranger things have happened during production...

    That is too much.
6.5 is correct, with a filter change.

    Find a different dealership.
