A Google search produces literally hundreds of similar cases. Maybe
there is an oil additive available that performs some useful function,
but I wouldn't put money on it.

It is too bad a similar organisation doesn't exist to protect taxpayers from
false advertising by governments. They tell you tax money is being used for
this and that but, the reality being different.

The best additive I find is the one in high grade oils. In that respect, I
only use Mobil 1 5W30 full synthetic oil. This way I get the best
protection for the engine.

I used various semi-synthetics for years. Works great and only costs
a couple of dollars more.

Exactly. They are BS. Remember the infomercial where they ran an
engine with the pan off and hit it with a fire hose? Remember that
oil is actually your primary coolant. The dousing with the fire hose
COULD be enough to keep the engine cool enough to keep it alive for
the 30 seconds or so that it was run.
DuPont has come right out and said that PTFE (Teflon) should not be
used in the oiling system of engines.

You don't need any oil additives, just use good oil. Besides, "third
party" additives may even react with or neutralize the additives
already in the oil...who knows for sure that they don't?
I use Mobil 1 synthetic myself...no additives.

respect, I
Funnily enough, last time I looked, M1 of that grade was rated no
higher than an ordinary API SL, although there is one M1 grade that
has a higher additive and performance specification. No doubt the M1
5w/30 will resist shear and heat breakdown in extreme situations
better than most API SL rated oils but that is hardly relevant to
normal street vehicles which have their oil changed at or near to the
manufacturers recommended interval. In any case, the shortcomings of
the oil in the additive area obviously exclude a higher official
rating.
