Mazda Miata: Oh man.

    Oh man.

    Howdy.

So I bought some new tires (Yokohama ES100's) and some replacement brake
pads (EBC Greenstuff Road/Sport) and yesterday I had the local tire shop
install them, along with an oil change.

I dropped off the car at 0900 and was told it could be until 4PM until
the car was ready. 4PM turned into 5:30PM.

After I paid the price rape job, I drove off and went about a mile. The
driver's side front brake was making some kind of loose/insecure noise
and I pulled over and noticed that I had no parking brake at all -
NOTHING. The dash brake light came on but the cable felt disconnected.
Obviously, it worked before they touched it.

I turned around and went back to the shop and the guy that had done the
"work" had gone home -- probably because it was 6PM and they had taken
all fucking day on my car and did a rush job at the last minute to get
    it out of the shop.

The one guy left said that it would probably be okay until a skeleton
crew on Monday AM can look at it as long as I wasn't going to San
Francisco or anything. Of course, I WAS supposed to be in SF a few hours
earlier, but didn't expect them to take nine hours to do this shit.

So fine, they can't fix it today. I'll bring it back in on Monday and
leave it like a flaming turd on their doorstep. Meantime, I'll drive the
couple miles to my friend's house for beer and poker -- the brakes
themselves are working, just making that loose-sounding noise on one
wheel so I should be able to creep a couple miles.

I get just about to my friend's house and a couple blocks away, I hit
the brakes and the front left brake feels and sounds like it's just shot
through the hood. Now starting to smoke. Well, at least the new tires
    look nice.

I pull up to my friends house, cursing like nobody's business as I get
out and notice stuff all over the hood. Brake fluid? Engine oil?

    Open the hood.

Engine oil. The cap wasn't put back on.

    TALLY:
    Oil change: FAILED
    Brakes: FAILED
Tires: PASSED (but they'll probably fuck those up when they fix their
    other fuckups.)

Oh, by the way [unrelated to yesterday's experience], MIATA for sale.
    1997 black and tan leather/top, 46000 miles, iPod-ready, 5-speed, NEW
TIRES, very recent back window replacement, new brake pads, oil changed
recently, if you can get it back in the engine. Currently located in
Sunnyvale, California. (It is a good car, but I don't know if they
    messed it up yesterday.)

that's a bad day man, hang in there. This is why I do everything I can by
myself. I know that doesn't help you now but this is an easy car to work /
learn on. You might want to begin.

Thanks! The Miata's out the door as soon as I can sell it -- it's been a
great car and it's fun, but I need a four-seater.

Anybody know if there will be a Mazdaspeed version of the Mazda3?

this is exactly why I prefer to do as much of the work myself. Except for the
tire mounting, the rest of the work is pretty simple and require minimal
tools. Not to mention that you would have a few more bucks in your wallet.

The Mazda 3 & 6 are both nice cars. You should drive them both. You might
be pleasantly surprised at how well they drive. I drove both at the
NYC rev-it up and I thought they were both good cars.

Yes, and it would have been quicker for me this time, since it took them
TWO DAYS to complete the fix. I had them tow the car this morning and
fix the issues. Happy to report that now everything is as it should be,
even the parking brake is working.

I went to the SF Rev-it-up event, but didn't have time to wait to drive
the cars. Well, I had time to drive the minivan since the line was so
    short, but be reasonable. ;-)

    I'm just expecting buyer's remorse if I buy a 3 and a Mazdaspeed version
comes on the heels of my purchase. Really, I'm just UNDECIDED about what
car to replace the Miata with, and the Mazda3 is just about it, but a MS
    version would solidify my decision.

Ideally, I'd like to stick as close to the Miata as I can, but there
aren't many choices. The deal is I need four seats. Four seat
convertibles -- not a lot of them about.

Cars I'm considering, in no order:
1- Acura TSX // not a convertible, but a really good sedan with features
I like and nice styling, if a little staid (can't afford a TL)

2- Chrysler PT Cruiser GT Convertible // Strangely, it's a hideous beast
outside, but I like the interior, it seats four and I like the driver's
seating position. I really want a Nav system for getting around the SF
bay area, which can be challenging -- this car has one but it's rather
an afterthought with a small screen that's part of the stereo (not
separate in the dash). 220HP isn't bad, but no six speed. Still, it's
    livable.

3- Mini Cooper S convertible // Again with the topless four-seater.
Won't really be on the streets when I'm buying, though, and no dealer
will ever get markup from my white ass, so this one is desirable, but
    won't happen. Rats.

4- VW Beetle. No. No VW until they start treating the American buyers
right. They're not getting me with the last-gasp R32 model, either.

    5- Mazda 3s 5-door // Meets 4-seater requirement, Loaded plus nav system
for $22k. Interior looks good. See above.

6- Scion xA // The roundy one, not the boxy one. Maybe this isn't a good
year for buying a car at all and I should just cheap out and get this
cute thing as a stopgap solution. I actually drove one and it was fun -
I don't know how it would be after a while. The shift action was
    definitely fun. Nice clutch.

7- BMW 1 Series (125i) // This would probably be right up my alley, but
alas, most likely won't be seen in the States until MY2007. Stupid BMW.

8- Mazda RX-8 // A perfect car at $28,000, but necessary [for me]
options push it to around $34,000. At $34k, I see myself in something
else. (That's really my issue with the Mini, too -- by the time I add in
my options via the mini.com BYO site, the damned thing is $30,000+.
Don't even think about adding the JC WORKS package!)

9- Everything else // Then there's other cars like the Volvo S40, which
is interesting. Subaru WRX or Legacy (I really have no experience with
any of these in #9) Also included here is the spackle choice of the
Honda Element, which my TV will fit in. I'm not an SUV guy, though, but
this specific car's flexible interior interests me. The lousy gas
mileage for such an underpowered thing is confusing.

All of the above fix my main problem: Having to haul more than just one
other person around. I maintain that my Miata is an excellent car. At
36, I've never owned a more fun car than my Miata. But after a while,
    it's a lousy ONLY car.

How often do you need that back seat? Can you keep the Miata, and either
buy a beater sedan, or rent a larger car as necessary?

    ha! I love it.

I actually bought the car a VERY NICE detail job this morning. Gee, I
didn't even know it was black! For too long, it's been dusty-laden and
birdshit adorned. It's black! I mean really black. Light can't even
    escape it!

I think that detail job made it look $1500 better price-wise, so I hiked
up my asking price a bit.

To answer you, yeah I have to sell it. It will be more difficult after
today's drive, but I can't afford [or store] two cars. I do need the
    back seats often. :-\
