New Tires for '03 Mountaineer (17 inch)

I can see that the OEM tires on my '03 Mountaineer won't last beyond 30,000
miles. They are BF GOODRICH Rugged something-or-other. What do you folks
recommend as replacements. These tires can be had for about $100 per plus
taxes and mounting. The Michelin Cross-Terrain, the choice OEM tire on many
'04 new Ford and GM SUVs, costs about 50% more. Will I get 50% more
treadlife? And if it's ONLY 50% more, then I am better off getting new
    Goodrichs every 30K I guess

Check the tread wear rating on the sidewall. Michelin's are around 420-440.
What's the treadwear rating of your present tire?

My wife is out with the vehicle, but the TIRERACK.COM site says 400. So does
a 440 rating mean the tire should last 10% longer than a tire with a 400
    rating?

It means the tires will probably be hard, bouncy, and have reduced traction
before the thread wears down to the indicator bars. The last three set of tires
I bought replaced tires with good tread.

I'm running with Toyo Open Country A/T's. Excellent. Last set got me
45,000 miles and had tread left.

Michelin LTX M/S-- slightly less expensive, but a superior tire to the
    x-Terrain.
On my last explorer, they lasted 60+k miles.

On my 02, they improved the ride dramatically.
