New SRX - do you think it is...

    Hi,
I'm going to buy an SUV, however I still can't decide whether to buy
full-size SUV or go for something smaller like for example the new
    Cadillac SRX!
Does anybody have a SRX, have you seen the new SRX on the street/in
dealership? What do you think of it? The vehicle has a good press!
    Mercedes has something similar, right?

I don't know what other SUVs are in the class… Infininty Fx35/45,
    Volkswagen Touareg…
Which one would you buy? Mercedes?

As you can see I have more questions than answers!

At last but not least, what's your opinion about Cadillac? I'm from
Europe and I don't know what to think about it... I know that Accura
    is a good brand!

THANKS a lot for any opinions!!!
    Peter

    Where are you now? USA?

Answers also depend on your location. I doubt you'd be happy with a
Cadillac in most of Europe -- where would you service it?

Acura = Honda in most of Europe, i.e. the brand name does not exist. Honda
    cars are generally pretty good.

But why do you want an SUV? Real offroading? Then Mercedes or Range Rover.

Why not buy a suitably sized saloon/sedan?

I saw it here in Pennsylvania...you've gotta be kiddin' me. It's a station
wagon on steroids. Almost $60 grand fully loaded. In 3 years it will be
worth $18,000 if that. I suspect they'll sell for 6 to 12 months as ANYTHING
new sells for a while to the "gee whiz" group who wants something new.
Longer term, all I can say is "you've gotta be kiddin' me".

    Yes, I'm in USA.
I'm looking for something smaller than SUV but bigger than sedan, and
I'm not interested in real offroading.
What do you think about Cadillac as a brand? What's opinion about this
brand in USA? Do you think that imported cars have better reputation?

    OK.
So what would you recommend and why?
    Something between SUV and sedan.
    What's your opinion about Cadillac?

Re: New SRX - do you think it is...

Two different questions. How about an AWD car? Audi? Subaru Outback is in
between. The Ford Escape Limited is a nice sized vehicle...OK, it IS an SUV
but not a HULKING one, and it's based on a car platform. Actually, your best
bet is probably the Lexus RX330. Again, it IS an SUV but rides ALMOST like a
    car.

As to Cadillac, here is my take. Cadillac was once the standard of the
world. "The Cadillac of this...or The Cadillac of that...". In 1975, they
came out with the first "international sized" vehicle, the Seville. It was
just a gussied up Chevrolet Nova, but gussied up enough that it was not
obvious and it sold well. Then came the 1977 downsizing of the their
meat-and-potatoes cars, the Deville/Fleetwood. The diet for these former
mammouth beasts was well accepted by the American public in a big way, and
those early 1977-early 1980's Devilles and Fleetwoods were pretty decent
vehicles. Many are still on the road today, 25-27 years later. Then, in
about 1980, came the GM diesel engine that was garbage in 30,000 miles. Then
the V8-6-4 engine that was garbage on the showroom. Then came the Cimarron,
another Chevorlet clone but much more obvious than Seville A low-end
Chevorlet with leather and a Cadillac crest. A total joke.

Then came the 1985 FWD kiddie cars. The geezers hated the design and the
boomers hated the design. Even beyond design, quality slipped and long-term
durability was a joke...the vehicles were junkyard material after 5-7 years.
Mercedes moved right in and became quickly the vehicle that budding and
affluent babyboomers aspired to...with BMW not far behind, while the
plaid-pants-early-bird-dinner geezers switched big time to buying Lincoln
Town Car as the living-room-on-wheels that they prefered. Enough time had
passed that people were willing to overlook the fact that 40 years prior,
Hitler was proud behind that 3 pointed star. Mercedes (and BMW) sales took
off. Then the whole luxury-car world was rocked again...in 1989 with the
Lexus LS400. Lexus quickly established itself as the king...with BOTH design
(albeit copied) AND quality. Mercedes and BMW hung on as leaders too,
although Mercedes is now in a free fall and in danger of having the same
thing happen as did Cadillac. As to Cadillac, it's now 20 years since the
first FWD kiddie cars, and they are still selling essentially the same
vehicle with, admittedly, many improvements. But they only appeal to a very
limited crowd, and have never caught on with babyboomers like the prior
generation caught on with their parents and grandparents. So they decided to
sell hulking trucks and station-wagons-on-steriods to save Cadillac. Short
term, they ARE selling vehicles. Longer term, it's unlikely that this mix
will build the brand loyalty needed to be a long term player
And are still huge depreciation machines....with many models still pretty
much junkyard material in about 7 years in many cases.

    Also consider the Pacifica

The fx 45 is a nice vehicle

The rx does not sound like the right car for you

the toureg is very nice but maybe actually overbuilt for street use only.

The srx and the Pacifica are larger vehicles and will rider better on the
    road.

    good luck!!!!!

For top reliability you'll probably want Toyota or Honda, but for driving
fun and a nice, non-bland design you'd want something else.

    Walk round a few showrooms.

    Choice is huge.

The Cadillac is on a new platform for GM which is outstanding. It appears
that Cadillic is not the Cadillac of old and has the real deal now. All the
car amg reviews seem to have been great. I have sat in one at the local
dealership and was very impressed with the fit and finsh and overall quality
