Toyota Prius: New Prius Headlights

    Re: New Prius Headlights

I just bought a new Prius with Package 7. This supposedly includes HID
headlights. The manual shows the headlight switch as having an "automatic"
position (position 3) in which the lights are turned on automatically at
dark and turned off in daylight. My Prius does not have a 3-position
headlight switch. I got very accustomed to the automatic headlights in my
2000 Camry and would like that feature.

Yeah, I know, how much trouble can it be to re-learn to manually turn on
    and off my headlights.!!

P.S. - How can I tell if the headlights are truly HID units?

    P.S.#2 - I LOVE THE CAR.

Good grief. That error has been in the manual for at least two years now.
I was told the language applies to the Canadian version of the Prius. I had
the same issue with my 2005. You would think they would have their act
together by now. If your headlights produce a whiter light, they are HID.
Glad you like your Prius. I sure do enjoy mine.

That feature is only on Canadian models. You do have HID headlights,
    though.

You don't have to. Just use the auto-off headlights (and remember to
open the driver's door at the appropriate time).

All Prius with the HID headlamps also have the factory front fog lamps,
    at least in the US.

What's the difference between "automatic headlights" and "auto-off
    headlights"??

Automatic headlights is a feature on the Prius sold in Canada; it will
turn the headlights on and off (and maybe switch between low and high
beams too; I'm not sure about that) depending upon light conditions.

Auto-off headlights will automatically turn the headlights off if the
driver's door is opened while the car is turned off. You have to follow
that sequence exactly, though: turn the car off, then open the door.
If you open the door first and then turn the car off, the headlights
    will remain on.

However, auto-off does use a bit of electric power, so if you're going
to leave the car parked for an extended period of time, turn the
    headlight switch to off.

Automatic headlights operate without human intervention. Auto-off
headlights (a misnomer) requires either rotation the switch to off or
opening the driver's door. One could argue that such manual intervention
stimulates automatic operation but that doesn't meet the first definition of
automatic: a. Acting or operating in a manner essentially independent of
    external influence or control.
