new to me 86 cherokee
I have just bought a 86 cherokee. with the 2.5l 4 cyl. and a 3speed auto
tranny I've got a few problems with it. one I was wondering if anyone nows
where I can track down vacumline connections online for it and the main
problem is the transmission shifts way to quick as soon as you take off and
hit about 5mph it is already in 3rd???? and when you manualy shift it it
will slip going from 2nd to 3rd. if you don't take your foot off of the gas
while shifting?? any one experience this before? also I would like to find a
deisel engine what one will fit this tranny etc?

Sounds like vacum modulator line is not hook up or the mdulator is bad
and needs replacement. As far as a engine swap, it would be more than
just a swap because you have to swap tranny because calibration would be
off and possible axle ratio to because of lower RPM range of engine.
Cheaper to keep current engine in long run. It you convert it to a stick
you will likely pick up a few MPG.

Like the snoman said, you are looking at a LOT of work and parts to

Why would you love a heavier engine with a more limited RPM range off
road??? If is kinda like wanting a 1400lb Cummins in a the front of your
P/U for offroad or like offroading with a snow plow attached to your gas
truck weight wise. Sure you would not offroad with a snow plow and yet
some think offroading with its equal in weight is cool. Some the most
fun offroad vehicle I have drive hav been small and lightweight with
small engines and plenty of gears. Even you stock 2.5 with some 33's or
so and 4.88 or 5.13 gears would surprize you. ALso if you upgrade to a
87 or newer TBI 2.5 you would pick up about 20 HP too. It will bolt in,
or bolt on, you just need the wiring for ECM.

Re: new to me 86 cherokee
the reason I like a deisel engine for offroad use is the places I go and
cross through ar sometimes in 5 foot of water and with a deisel you don't
have to worry about getting you ingnition componets wet ect. you just need a
good snokel and plum your vents for your axles and tranny and crank case
through it verses having to seal your electronics etc. just my 2cents.

Re: new to me 86 cherokee
The flaw in this logic though is that it takes a LOT less water
ingestion in a diesel to destroy motor than it does with a gas motor, a
lot less. I would water proof a gasser for this.

Re: new to me 86 cherokee
What sno says is correct. My 89 Wrangler has the stock 2.5L, and is turning
33's thru 4.10's. I don't do great on the highway, but have plenty of power
off road in 4-LO. If I can't complete an obstacle, it's never for lack of
power.
