Toyota: New Corolla has Rotten Egg Smell ??

New Corolla has Rotten Egg Smell ??
The dealer is saying that the gasoline companies are dumping high sulfur
gasoline and that is causing the rotten egg smell in the exhaust of our new
(300 miles) Corolla. Funny, my old Taurus doesn't make a rotten egg smell
and it uses the same gasoline.
Any insights?
Thanks,
Bill

Probably from the catalytic converter. Was very common a few years ago.

AFAIK all new Toyotas have that smell. It goes away after awhile.

Re: New Corolla has Rotten Egg Smell ??
Hmmmm. It never happens in my 2004 Corolla S at all. There is no
pungent smell whatsoever. It looks like a problem in the fuel you are
using. What kind of gas do you use?? I use High Octane 91 (premium) as
recommended by the Toyota people for brand new cars and it works
extremely well.

He Red.... Stinky converters are not unique to late model ULEV cars
that are using gas with relatively high sulfur content. No such
issue here in southern California where the lowest sulfur gasoline is
required. Canadians ... roll up the window! LOL

Re: New Corolla has Rotten Egg Smell ??
I seem to recall several posts on this NG a few months
ago which I thought were a guy for S. California saying he
was using low sulfur gas and it didn't help.
Yeah, fortunately that 11 months of winter means I don't have the
window down alot.
I seem to notice that the smell is worse the days following a fill up.
Is it true, as someone mentioned, that this can get better with time?

Window doesn't matter. It comes in through the vent system. Winter weather
means you have the heater and fan on a lot.

Philip, did you check your owner's manual to see what it says? Does it say
87 pump octane "or higher" like the Tercel's?

Re: New Corolla has Rotten Egg Smell ??
My owners manual says to use 87 octane gas. I haven't found anything about
using 91 during break-in. Where did you find this information?
I usually buy Shell or Sunoco. Haven't been closely watching which of these
two is the source at any one time. My wife usually drives and fills the
car.
Thanks for your commnets.

Hi Steve,
hmmmm..interesting. I am positive that I did not smell a pungent smell
so far. That is why I was thinking it might be the problem in the gas.
Nevertheless, I will try smelling very closely in the evening today
when I take my car out and see if I feel anything :-)
