Toyota: New Corolla has Rotten Egg Smell ??

Re: New Corolla has Rotten Egg Smell ??
I can't find it right now, but there is a PDF produced by the provincial or
federal government, showing average sulphur ratings from the various
refineries supplying gasoline to the Ontario market.
As I recall, Esso was clearly the worst, with PetroCan and it's antiquated
Oakville refinery not far behind. In fact, PetroCan's premium had worse
ratings than their regular 87 octane fuel. Shell was a little better, but
Sunoco was clearly the producer of the cleanest gasoline in terms of sulphur
ratings.
From memory, Sunoco Gold hovers near 30 PPM, their regular is over 100. But
the other producers are between 200 and 400 PPM.
Irving Oil produces the best gas in Canada, but I don't know where you can
buy it in Ontario.
As far as "Tactrol" goes, I think it's marketing. Give me all the hype you
want, just start with clean gas, please.

Re: New Corolla has Rotten Egg Smell ??
OK, found the site. My numbers in the post above are a little out of date
(I was recalling 2002 data), and inaccurate.
See http://www.ene.gov.on.ca/envision/air/sig/averagelevels.htm
You can find historical data from 2001 through Q1 2003.
Looks like PetroCan and Shell cleaned up their act in Q1 2003. Hope it
continues. Sunoco's premium is still the best widely-available gas, but
their regular isn't as clean as the numbers I remembered. Imperial (Esso)
is still the worst, but getting better as well.
I'll be switching to Shell (Sarnia) and PetroCan (Oakville) gas based on the
new numbers. Note that they used to be much worse in 2002. PetroCan
premium reached as high as 660 PPM in Q1 2002!

It may be producing cleaner gas now, but I still get the impression that it
isn't very efficient. It closes when? 2005? At least it seems they
finally did something about the sulphur content, reducing it by 75%. Though
they should have done it years ago. The new standard that is coming is 30
PPM. I doubt they'll be investing in the Oakville refinery to reach that
goal.

Thanks for finding that.
I had searched around a couple of months ago but never found
anything. Exactly what I was looking for.
I thought they had already closed the Oakville plant?

Re: New Corolla has Rotten Egg Smell ??
Hi again Craig,
After reviewing the data I wonder about Sunoco.
First, I guess I don't view Sunoco as that widely
available compared to the others. The Ottawa phone
book lists 34 Shell stations, 40 Esso stations but only
12 Sunocos.
Second, does all Sunoco gas come from that Sarnia
plant or could they be bringing it from south of the border?
That Shell plant in Scottford Alberta seems in a league
of its own for low sulphur.
I'm in Ottawa so I'm guessing that the Shell gas comes
from Montreal making it a much better choice than Sunoco
from sulphur point of view (and more available). I think
when my Petro Canada credit from Toyota runs out I'll
switch back to Shell.
