Toyota: For New Camry: 4 or 6 Cyl.? Opinions ?

Re: For New Camry: 4 or 6 Cyl.? Opinions ?
Take them for a test drive and find out if the 4 has enough acceleration for
entering the highway. If you have a family consider the weight would slow
you down. If you don't and you find the acceleration adequate, get the 4,
you'll save money on the purchase and the gas. If it isn't get the 6. This
is a subjective thing so only you can decide.

Most people assume bigger is better, big mistake.
Not enough to matter.
They both have sufficient power, the only reason you might want a V-6 would be
for towing and these cars really are not designed for that. If you live in an
area with a lot of steep hills you might want a V-6.
No. For normal usage like just transportation the 4 cylinder will serve you
much better and cheaper both in fuel and maintenance in the long run.
Camry has it all over the Accord if your planning on keeping it a long time
(beyond 100,000 miles). Up to that point they are about the same, after that
the Camry will shine.

SNIP-A-DOO-DA
Care to tell me the difference in gas consumption in percentage?
I have a 2.2 4 cyl.

The 6 cyl will let you take off faster at a light so you have a better
chance of getting to the next light first, other than that it's just a
waste of money.

Re: For New Camry: 4 or 6 Cyl.? Opinions ?
In my V6 Camry, I got 27 MPG combined. The Inline 4 Camry is around 30
MPG combined. Is 10% better gas mileage important to you? You will
also pay less for the 4 cylinder model - with less features. If you
option the 4 cylinder model up to the V6 standard features, the price
might be the same. Also, if the brakes are important, ABS and four
wheel disk brakes are available on the SE model in 4 cylinder. The V6 is
not available in a manual transmission anymore - is this important?
The V6 has more power than the 4 cylinder. Drive both and decide if the
4 cylinder has enough power. Run the AC on full, with a trunk full of
luggage and four people in the car - up a hill. The four cylnder may be
adequate if you are not in a hurry.

not sure about the current model, for the older model, 4 cyl require
regular gas, 6 require premium, so instead of just mpg, it's more cost
per miles you after

4 will be enough. The plus side is that Toyota use the same gas tank for
both 4 and 6 (well at lease the 93 that I own), so you can go a long way
on one tank of gas ( > 350 miles )
get the LE 4 (skip the ABS if you want)

Re: For New Camry: 4 or 6 Cyl.? Opinions ?
Take the 4 Cyl Camry for a spin in the model you prefer. Determine how it
performs. If the power is just average, then I would go with the V6. This
way if you take a family trip with 3 to 4 passengers in the car, a trunk
full of luggage, the A/C on, and need to overtake a car or tractor trailer,
you have enough power to do so. That was the logic I used when I bought my
2002 Camry LE V6. The V6 is smoother, quieter, and more responsive. One
thing to note is that for the 4 Cyl Camry, the required and recommended fuel
is 87 octane. For the V6, the required is 87 octane but the recommended is
91 octane or higher. I have calculated in Canadian $$ that over 24,000 KM
(15,000 miles) of driving, the cost of running premium fuel costs about $20
month or about 67 cents a day. My Camry should run just fine with 87 grade
octane but my logic is that if you can't afford to buy the recommended fuel
for the engine in the car, then don't buy that model of car with that
engine.
The longevity of the V6 and the 4 Cyl are about the same if you follow the
maintenance schedule of Toyota as a bare minimum. Sometimes the dealers
make recommendations of extra service to make more $$ for themselves and/or
depending on the condition of your vehicle.
I tend to spend more then the minimum on maintenance so that the vehicle
will give me many years of driving. When a car is new, you can skimp out on
services and not have any adverse effects. Once the vehicle gets older,
skimping out can become a costly experience. Another thing to consider if
you live in a snowbelt region and the roads are heavily salted, is to apply
an annual coat of rust protection using the drippy oily stuff. In Toronto,
Canada, and parts of the US, rust can severely reduce the reliability and
durability of the Camry and other mid priced vehicles.
My intention is that my Camry will last at least 323,000 KM (200,000 miles).
From my readings on this newsgroup and other sites, that is a pretty
conservative estimate.

Huh? How is that a "big mistake"? It's absolutely TRUE in most

In your opinion. The difference IS significant.
I'd be more inclined to advise the V6 if he wants an automatic.
Yes. Of course he "wants" it. The only question is, is it worth the
extra money.
It won't serve him "better". It will be cheaper.
