    New to BMW....couple of questions

I just bought a '98 323is. Love driving the car, but I have a couple
    questions:

    1) How do I 'set' the cruise control? The lever has "resume, accel,
decel, off" but I don't know how to set it initially. I've tried each
of the above...the 'resume' (push lever towards steering column) made
sense, but does not work either.

    2) I do not have an owner manual. Should I get one from BMW or is
there a good aftermarket book with the info I'll need (maint schedule,
how the cruise control works , etc.)

    3) Do I really need 93-95 octane fuel? I assume the answer is 'yes',
but I have to ask with gas prices soaring.

    Thanks,

    1) sounds like your cruise is broken

    2) Get the Bentley Manual

    3) No - Run the cheapest stuff available - your car has anti-knock sensors so
it should run okay. If it 'knocks' bump up to a more expensive grade. Of
course lower octane will result in lower performance blah blah blah .... but
    its cheaper!

    welcome to the 'club'

No set button? I do not have cruise on my bmw but my previous car did. You
turned it on by holding set for a second or to and this set the cruise at
your current speed, then use accell or decel to alter it resume reverts to
the original set speed. It normaly turns off if you hit brakes or cluth and
is over ridden if you hit the throttle, coming back on when you decelerate
to the cruise speed. Also most cruise systems will not operate below a set
speed normaly about 40mph, make sure you are above this speed bofore
    activating it.
Like I said I dont know if the bmw system is the same but they all work in
    basicly the same way

There is a whole tread earlier is this group disccussing this

They're all basically the same. But first you have to switch it on. A
separate button, perhaps? Mine has on the dash, and a warning light comes
on. Then use the 'accel' or 'decel' to set the speed. 'Resume' brings it
back to speed after you've braked, etc. Either touching the brake or
clutch will disengage it. 'Off' does the same.

In my (non-BMW) car you hold 'accelerate' till the desired speed is reached.
If this is the current speed then one doesn't hold in this position long.
This action of pushing the lever activates the cruise control.

I haven't actually tried activating the cruise control by pusing the lever
down to decelerate, but it may not work.

However, once it IS activated, once can reduce the controlled speed by
    pushing into 'decelerate'.

The point of all this is to say that there is no separate activation switch
in my car, but the original poster says he has an 'off' position.

Hi Ron, mine is an older model car but sounds same control: cruise is a
single stalk, push in toward column to resume.
If you push it in towards column, release, and then either click lever away
from you a number of times, or pull back towards you ditto, speed should
increase or decrease by about 1 mph per 'click' respectively- if you get
nowt I agree with other poster ... it's busted!

    best regards Tom

Push it towards the dashboard, kind of like the highbeams, but the other
    way.

I use the mid-grade and it works OK.

If it's the same as on my '91 525i, you push it forward (towards the
    dashboard) to set a speed.

You might be able to download one from the bmwna website.

91 AKI should be fine - we just had another big thread about that...

As we said in that other thread, names are immaterial, numbers matter.

    So what's mid-grade?

Usually octane rating 89 AKI (possibly 87ish in a few mountainous
areas), also commonly known as "plus".
