Toyota: Need serious advice on the Celica

Need serious advice on the Celica
Hi there,
So, I'm 99% I'm going to buy a Celica. Test drove it the GT Auto,
didn't seem super fast, but I have a small budget, so I'm not
springing for anything super expensive (boxsters, bmws, etc).
Here is the issue I need feedback with - is there really a
noticeable difference between GT and GTS? Some reviews say yes, but
others say the difference is only noticeable at high rpm, which is not
the type of driving one can routinely use in everyday driving. And
especially if I go Auto tramsission, I might never even hit the high
rpms to take advantage of the higher hp.
Also, is there a big difference between manual and auto? I've never
driven a manual and am inclined to stick with auto. But I've also
heard the performance drops with auto (though I don't understand at
all why it should make a difference aside from letting the driven get
closer to redline before shifts).
Most importantly, has anyone had any problems with the Celica? I've
heard issues with visibility out the rear window (spoiler in the way),
and that the engine is horribly loud (is the engine noise different on
GT or GTS?)
Any help on advice or concerns about purchasing a Celica would be
useful - and if you think its a great car, I'd love to hear why also.
Thanks.

Re: Need serious advice on the Celica
Andrew:
Drive both. Make the decision based upon your feel of the car. The GTS
has more power at the top end but lacks torque at the lower end.
Admittedly you will probably not use it much, but it sure is nice when
you're trying to get onto the freeway on a short onramp, or trying to
pass someone on a two lane road.
This will depend entirely on the driver. Aside from a little friction
loss in the torque converter, the HP to the wheels is by in large the
same as a manual. The manual transmission (by virtue of more gears)
will however keep the engine operating in the powerband for much longer
than the auto.
It is a little hard to see out the back window, and the spoiler does get
in the way at times. This in no way compares to the immense blind spot
just behind the doors. I've added a small convex (concave?) mirror to
the drivers side view mirror to aid in seeing what is along side.
Don't get me wrong, I love my GTS. It may not be the fastest car out
there, but I like the styling and the ride. It is a nice riding car on
and off the freeway, and handles predictably. Yes, you can get yourself
in a lot of trouble if you are too aggressive, because to put it quite
simply, it's not a Ferrari. Didn't cost as much as one either.

RE: Need serious advice on the Celica
If you are going to buy an auto-transmission Celica, just
stick with GT. Although there are ~40 hp differences between
the 2 models, you probably cannot notice any (except on your
bank statement) differences due to poor power transmit ratio
of the AT. AT typically lose 10% or more of the engine's power,
which will make the 40hp difference barely noticable.
Even more, if you are can't crank up the RPM, you will feel no
hp at all. If you want to feel some sports-car-kick, you need a
car with Torque. Celica GTS TRD has only 130 @ 6x00 rpm,
which is even lower than S2000 by a margine(152).
My conclusion is, automatic transmission is your key issue. Cars
with 4 cylinder, NA rarely go beyond 200 hp. If they do, it is always
at the redline. AT won't let you get to redline, not even half. So,
just buy the GT model if you gonna stick to AT.
