Need to replace the radio/CD player in 2000 Altima

The CD player will not play CDs - it just gives a error and ejects the CD. I
plan on buying a replacement stereo from local Nissan service dept.

Can anyone tell me how to get the console off/take it apart to get the old
stereo out and put in the new one? The labor costs are outrageous

    Easy. Well relativly anyway.

1st: pull the trim piece off the console that surounds the shifter. be
careful not to break it, but it doesn't require tools to do so.

2nd: remove two screws in the bottom of the main wood trim piece.

3rd: remove two upper screws by the climate controls.

4th: remove 4 screws holding stereo in.

5th: Now I've heard of people pulling their entire dash apart to remove
the actual stereo from the dash. I didn't want to, so I turned the car
on, shifted it back to 1st, put on the park break and turned off the
car. There! You can remove the stereo without any more screws being
    pulled! It's wonderful!

6th: to start car, just return gear shift lever to neutral or park.
