Infiniti: need info on Q45

need info on Q45
I知 considering purchasing a 1992 Q45. My husband and I test drove it
this past weekend and it runs great. There were just a couple of
noises that concerned me and I知 looking for input. The fuel pump had
a pretty significant hum that I could only hear from inside the car --
especially from the back seat. We asked the current owner about it &
he implied that it had always sounded like that. (He痴 the second
owner and he purchased it from someone he knew.) The car is in great
shape and he claims to have taken really good care of it mechanically.
However, I知 having a little trouble believing that it is normal for
the fuel pump to be that loud on a luxury car even if it is 14 years
old. Has anyone experienced that?
Also, there was a sort of "knock" when turning. It was just a
single knock. Had I not looked in the glove compartment, I would have
just thought it was something rolling around in there. Any thoughts
on what that might be?
I知 attracted to the styling of the car and I was really pleased with
the ride. But I致e never owned an Infinity and I知 having trouble
finding much information on a 1992 model. Any input would be
appreciated.

Re: need info on Q45
Having driven an Infiniti M30 for 15 years, as well as being a passenger in
my wife's Infiniti, as well as having driven G20, I30, I35, M30 and now an
M45, I can relate my experience. With the M30, when you turn on the ignition
switch, but don't start the engine, you can hear the fuel pump for some
seconsd until it pressurizes the fuel line and goes off. The sound is not
very loud, and will be completely masked by the engine at idle. With my new
M45, there is no sound at all.
That "knock" may be a problem, such as a ball joint, that needs to be looked
at.
Bye.

I have a 1991, and ever since it was new, it's been quiet. I never heard
the fuel pump. These sorts of things tend to be improved from one year to
another, so I'd be surprised if it's normal in a 1992. It's possible that
it's been that way since it was new, and the original owner never brought it
in to be fixed.
My 1991 is in good shape, but has little book value. If I wanted to find
something new with a comparable ride, I'd be spending a lot of money. As for
the noise, I'd check with a front end place before buying it. Ask him if
you can take it down to somebody who does alignments, struts, etc, to look
at it.

noise when i turn, the mechanic says its the tension rods, the car overheated
before i bought it so the water pump was replaced, there is also a constant
whining noise coming from just under the manifold ,the mechanic says the
knock sensors have to be replaced,so do the timing guides.check out this

Re: need info on Q45
I have had a 92 Q45 sinceit was new but i only have 92,000 miles on it.
I have never heard the whine that you write of, nor have I heard the
sound of something rolling around.
My major issues have been (and are reported by other owners) three:
1. The transmission went at 80,000. This appears to be because of the
fact that the "cooler" is in the radiator, as it was designed to heat up
the transmission fluid for the east coast contingent. For those of us
who live in California, it is transmission death. I installed a separate
transmission cooler after the replacement.
2. Potential for cracked valve timing chain guides. Until 1993, these
were made of plastic and crack at about 10-12 years or 125,000 miles. If
they crack and pieces fall off, they go directly into the oil pump
vances, which they destroy. The first thing I would do is to have them
replaced with the metal ones. The job will cost a bit ovr $2000. Mine
were replaced at 82,000 (11 years). One was cracked but had not flaked
off yet. No problems. I had the water pump replaced at the same time.
3. In California and Arizona, in particular, the injectors tend to have
a short life because of additives in the gas. I have had all of mine
replaced after the second one failed.
I love my Q; I could probably spend $50-60,000 to replace it but why?
